Pulled the box as friend was getting probs finding neutral.
The boat is a 60's Swedish motor sailer with a V-P 4 pot petrol (gas) fitted in 1970(?)
The symptoms were reduced movement on the shift, to the point where it would self select F or R without any aparent movement.
On stripping, there was a failed bearing on the tail-shaft, but replacing this actually reduced the movement of the shift. The internals were in good condition with no other signs of wear.
The system is a cone, that is attached to the tail-shaft, that fits a cone for forward and backs off into another cone that is reversed gear for..well...reverse. Problem arised that the distance it moved is nearly zero. No adjustment in the system, so I introduced two shims to distance the rev. cone further back and allow the selecter indents to hold the center cone free of the other two.
The friction material is a a fibrous brake like material, so my question is: Could the stuff have swelled from hypoy oil being used? The boat was immersed in a botched launch and the owner changed the oil as a precaution. Then changed it to thinner stuff.
The only variable in the system is the friction stuff. Any one out there with experience of these (old) boxes?
Thanks,
Andrew
