Hi all,
New user here that has been searching for an easily built displacement hull boat in the 20 foot range. I really liked the boat that Harry Bryan featured in the article this issue. Here is my question.
Are there plans available? How difficult would it be to loft the boat up to 20'? Can the hull shape be resolved in plywood or is lapstrake a must? How about strip planking?
I live in southern waters so the boat will not live in the water all the time. It will be on a trailer in my garage. It may spend weeks, but not months in the water when I am to lazy to pull it between weekends!
Harry, can you help? Or is there anybody else out there that has any sugestions.

Blinn,
There are lots of displacement designs available in that size range. One that comes immediately to mind: Karl Stambaugh's "Redwing" is available from the WoodenBoat Store in the 18' length, and larger sizes are available from the designer at http://www.cmdboats.com/
Another place to look is Atkin & Co. They have a lot of nice utility launches. Many were designed for planking, but can be built in plywood, if you prefer. They have only a small fraction of their offerings on their web site. http://www.by-the-sea.com/atkin&co/ You'll probably need to order the catalog if you're interested.

Doesn't the article about Bryan's boat say something about a 19' foot version being available soon?

The Simmons Sea Skiff might be a possible alternative if plans aren't available or adaptable for your needs.

Plans are available for 18,20, and 22 foot versions. Fairly straightforward and simple plywood lapstrake construction, from what I understand.

I can't wait to start Top Hat (#169) or maybe Handy Billy.

Harry sells plans for the HandyBilly in both 18' and 21', but no mention was made that I saw in WB re plans for the Rambler, if that's what you are referring to. The HandyBilly is designed for batten seam, but I suspect one could build in ply or even coldmold it without much tweaking. I was in on the building of an 18' HB with a batten seam bottom and riveted lapstrake sides. Used western red cedar for planking. Worked fine.
This new fella shows some tumblehome in the transom lines, but it looks to me that ply would go around there no sweat. Strip planking should be no trouble. But if 'twas meself, I'd contact Harry with the questions and see if he's drawn the longer version he mentions, or will soon. That one sounds interesting to me, and hopefully we'll see it before too long.
Rambler is lovely, innit?
