Depends on the condition of the seams. Can you provide a pic?
2x6 crossplanks 20' long, right?
Check the plank fasteners, first to make sure they are in good condition and tight. They alone can cause leaks.
If the plank edges butt each other tightly on the inside of the hull and the fasteners and wood in the caulking seams are in good condition, then recaulking will probably be sufficient. If what's at the bottom of those seams now is black goo, then it needs to come out, first. If it still looks like cotton and oakum, then it may just need tightening up with more oakum added as required to fill the seam.
If you have to reef out the seams, then recaulk by soaking the seams in boiled linseed (gets sticky and helps hold the cotton) followed by cotton followed by poison oil-based paint (copper or lead), followed by oakum to fill the seam followed by oil-based putty.
Get an experienced caulker locally to show you how to do it.....pay him if you have to....it's not difficult, but takes some "touch" to avoid splitting out the back of the plank while getting cotton tightly into the seam bottom....it's mostly just a lot of hard work.
Besides materials, for a simple flatbottom barge hull you'll probably just need a threading iron, a making iron and a large, 16" mallet. The threading iron is fairly sharp and is used to tap the cotton in tight to the seam bottom by tapping parallel to the bevels of the plank edges. The thicker making iron is used to then pound the cotton tight, and pound in the oakum atop it to fill the seam just below the edge, leaving enough space for the putty.
If the seams are open on the back and the hull has recently been in the water, then you can also add cedar wedges to help fill the seam while recaulking without using any glue at all...the caulking and seam compound will hold them in nicely.
I'd avoid routing and gluing where I could....a solution for hopelessly ragged plank seams....it's a lot more work than what I described and you will have to caulk anyway, as the wedge is only glued to one plank. Gluing seam wedges into both plank edges will likely eventually cause one or more planks to split when the hull is hauled and dried out, and I wouldn't.

Now Bobs on the ball you will be right sonshine!... As he says pics would be good Nobby ala bitofascallywag... if you dont know how to do it... sigh... email them to me an I will whack em up for you
Or you could look around for a post on the subjeck by one Norm Messinger which will set you to rights on how to do it... but that may be a bit of a trial so just email em and I'll whack em up for you no worries
Heck!! I will even toss em up on that other board for you never know an Aussie may well answer you eh?? tongue.gif Strewth wouldnt that be a bloody bobby dazzler of a thing  But then you might have to wait a bit an well the Yanks are awake now an well weve got their attention havent we?...
mmmm better yet maybe you should just email em to ol Bob up there an then he can either whack em up here himself or just answer you direct an no need for anymore postin an such eh? ;)
You came through again Shane! :D As Bob said, sounds like a pretty standard caulking job if things are in good shape (but quite miserable underneath a flat bottom barge).

Dave Fleming likes these jobs up higher....on at least 55gal drums so the mallet can be swung underhand. That way only your neck needs surgery afterwards instead of both shoulders. ;)

True Bob... and mate Id be right there to help him out... if Tassy wasnt so ruddy far away! bloody long road trip to Melborne (shudder) then a boat trip to the pimple on the bum down there then another road trip to his place... fair whack of miles ol mate doable I guess but what her highness would say if I said "oi spunkbubble I gotta buggar of to Tassy to help out a 2 headed son of a 4 nippled sheila to fix up an old barge" I dont want to even guess at... I think though that me days would be seriously numbered  specially since it would be a workin trip so her highness the loverly possumpoop an the hoonberrys couldnt come! ;)
Still hes posted on the Aussie woodworkers forum and there are numerous Tasweejians who frequent that one... (yep 2 headed ones too!! :D ) if he has some patience and a bit less of the attitude he will get some help without a worry some are already showing interest in his project
Helps there if he wants it... but he also has to be able to accept help when offered and wait for comments and opinions thoughts ideas etc to come before critizing eh?
Tasweejians eh

well as she has about 4 feet draught the barge is slowly filled,1 or 2 boats pull her over, air is pumped in and voila an upside down barge 3 to 6 spars are layed down at waters edge,a block and tackle is arranged maybe 6 to 1 then hopefully i can tow her up,let her dry and go to work,we are still in the wilderness to a certain extent so it saves on slip fees etc,but then as summer is just round the corner it may open right up and as im caulking i put too much in,she reenters the water swells again splits planks etc, etc,
