i have a riding sail for my lobsterboat, but being a fisherman and not a sailboater i dont know how to rig this thing up. ive taken some pictures and im sure i can figure out the up and down, what i dont know about is how to rig the diagonal pole. how do i rig it to the corner of the sail and how does it attatch to the mainmast? basically how do i rig the diagonal pole, whats this sail called, and how do i rig the pulleys so it folds up nicely

Jigger mast? You are going to spread the sail over the stern to keep you on course or head into the wind? The diagonal stick is secured tight to the top of the sail, the bottom end is pushed up to tighten the canvas and secured to the cleat. You should have more stick than you need to do this. Can't comment on how you are going to put it in the boat, nothing to work with.

Its called a Spanker or Stay sail.Rigged on the opposite side of your hauling station. It helps to keep the bow into the wind as you haul your gear. Its a different type of sail than the usual marconi (triangle) sail.
