In the begining, each Concordia Yawl wwas delivered with a Båteka. Some survived, some did not, and a few are born anew.

Over the Winter, Jeff Makholm has constructed an 8'6" Båteka, from from the original 1950 plans, that were found in the Concordia archives at Mystic Seaport.. The construction was meticulous; the details are fascinating; and the result is nothing short of beautiful. All of this was done in the family room of his townhouse in the Boston's South End.

Background music, "Mary L. Mckay", is from "Lovely Ernestina: Songs Of The Sea" by the New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey Chorus

Nice job.

The Båteka is a very nice design for the purpose.
Building Luna's was a pleasant exercise.

.
A very pretty little tender. And after recent threads on where a towing eye should be located it's nice to see that hers is in the right place.

I trust Margo won't take this amiss, but I have this photo of Arapaho herself from about 2004 and with our friend Dave Geer helming, that I'd like to share.

The one Jim Conlin built is nice and the mast step is a good conversation piece.

Amiss Mike ... absolutely not. Although Dave isn't helming, that picture, taken by Forumite rbgarr during the 2003 ERR and another I took of Dave on the bow on another occasion as Jeff was deftly backing through a maze of boats on the IYRS dock are two of my all-time favorite. :)

Margo,

Thanks for thinking of me but IIRC I just posted (not took) that photo of Arapaho. I found it on the ERR photo pages, I think.

I took those photos.
They're much better than mine. I'm not above stealing.

I congratulate you on your boat.

Lovely boat and videos.
I am both inspired and discouraged. How's that possible?

You'd be better to congratulate him on his photos ;) Although I've not had the pleasure of meeting him, Stonehorse46 has a "thing" for Concordias (at least) and has sent me several great shots from Padanaram. :)

I was in Padanaram last week and the place was absolutely rotten with Concordia yawls, including Arapaho.

Yep. I'm sure the folks that have to sit and look at the harbor all day hate the clutter ;)

Especially those with the curious brown coloration on their topsides.

How silly to spend a gazillion dollars a year on varnish. Just to make something... beautiful

Go figure...

I been told that that bright topsides cost less to maintain than painted. They need less fairing.

Whether it's true is immaterial.

Congratulations are gratefully accepted. I do think that they are beautiful boats.

A different perspective, I have a distant view of ARAPAHO's mooring from my Stone Horse's backyard drydock. If you look closely, Jeff is hauling the Båteka onto the cabin top.http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w220/Stonehorse46/Concordia%20Yawls/05-25-0938.jpg

Beautiful job on the Båteka!!! I knew my yawl was missing something essential.

Put me on the list of borrowing those forms, I am now convinced the Nutshell will not do the boat justice.

Where's the Båteka? I hope it's not just for Sunday best.

Hello Jim,

Jeff keeps the Bateka inside at Concordia and usually brings it down if he is going out for overnight.

Keeps the dyer on the New Bedford Yacht Club floats for a quick in and out.

I think that mizzen needs to be tipped back a couple of inches.
