Russ, did you see the boat in Martin's video that looked just like a cabinless version of Sjogin?

Nice rowboats and photo of Sjogin!

Is the rowboat a 'stock item' for Beaton's? Do they still build them? (I'm remembering something like that...)

There seems to be a deeply rooted aversion to paint on wooden boats here. Even workboats have traditionally been varnished. I wonder why, because Sjogin looks awesome!

I already have painted topsides (and I've been asked more than once if it has been fibreglassed, who would come up with such an idea?), I've been wondering if I could paint more and still have it look like a proper wooden boat.

Steven,

I saw so many of Sjogin's cousins. The sprit rigged boat on the Rum Regatta thread is a pretty close. Thanks Martin.

One of my dreams is to ship her to the Baltic and sail in search of her home waters. (Koster Isles I think. But she wouldn't look out of place from Denmark to St. Petersburg.)

Dave,

Beaton's built these this past off-season to a boat designed and built by Dave Beaton in the 60's. Thery're kind of a grandparent/grand kid, poking along the marsh rowboat. The varnished one is going to be the tender for the new Silent Maid

Thanks BarnacleGrim,

Sjogin wears the workboat finish well. When she came along she had varnished rub and toe rails, all oak, with all that entails. Mr. Kirby does her proud.

Russ Yeah, mine too... When she goes back over the rule is going to be ' if it can't come off the boat (easily!) over the winter, it's painted.'

Lot's of brightwork I'm actualy amazed at how little paint is on her. Thank god she's a manageable size. I actually have a can of varnish and brushes, some scotch bright and masking tape on board and after a sail I do a little touch up and add another coat occasionally ;)

Gert,

IIRC I may have posted an eBay alert to the bronze winch, and Joe followed up. It may have been auctioned by a guy in Florida with the eBay 'name' iloveyou99 (that's not a joke).

He often auctions off bronze boat hardware, among other things, and may know about more winches or could keep an eye out for one.

Search "eBay sellers" on eBay using that name.

One of the other businesses in the building I'm in is run by a guy who crews Freindship. He said the wind was on the nose the whole trip up, and a big sea running so several of them got seasick.

She is up for regular maintenance, the sign at her birth says she will be back in June. It also says something along the lines of "if all goes well." Clearly they have some prior haul out expereience.

Mick,

Yes it did, and I meant to post about that. I was at Lukes's last week and the boat was gone. The guys in the yard told me that they'd replaced garboard planks over the winter, which seemed odd because I'd always/only seen her outside under cover. They then said she'd been taken to another nearby yard, which happens to be the one I launch from.

I went to the other yard and they knew nothing about it, so I'm stumped at the moment. I'm keeping an eye out as the summer comes on for her on the water or in other shops I'll be visiting. I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

Hi Joe,

From this last year:
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/Tidbit/IMG_0633.jpg

to this a year later:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/photo-257.jpg

Not sure exactly what is going on with your varnish but something isn't working right. Those dark stains and bare patches with more dark stains suggest the integrity of the varnish has been compromised in some fashion, way too soon, and you are getting water/moisture penetration.Flat surfaces are tough to get right and protect properly since water will stand and the sun beat down harder on it. What is your varnishing schedule again?

I can almost taste a cold one right about now:D

Cheers,

Peter

Just a close up photo as opposed to a 20 ft away view ;). The deck varnish looks good keyed it again this year and appled 2 more coats of Petit's Captains. The dark patches are remainders from when I used to oil the deck and I did not want to sand that deep. The deck is a pretty soft Port Orford Cedar so gentle is the way to go.

This is sort of the same distance shot this year

.

Stop it Joe,you're killing me !:D:D:D Up here when a guy screws up a rubrail repair install we use a different word than "stewardship".Unfortunately it doesn't translate well into your mother tongue :D:D

But that's beside the point regarding what I see in this picture:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/photo-257.jpg

I can appreciate your concern about sanding too hard on the soft decking thus the oil residuum showing up as dark"water stains" and that's fair enough. However, there remains those patches which appear as dry and grey(gray) unvarnished surfaces. And no,I'm not referring to what is happening along (and probably under) the toe rail.Just the deck planking.

From the quality of the photo or perhaps it is the computer screen here at work, these patches look unvarnished. On the other hand, photos being photos, it could also be varnish which has lifted from the surface but has yet to actually peel or fail thus giving the illusion ,from a different angle or light condition, of still being sound.

Out of curiosity, which side does the sun strike Tidbit when she is tied to her quay? In person, can you see or have you noticed the "sunny" side wearing faster than the other? Perhaps more attention should be layed on the sunny side to prevent premature failure?

Most importantly, I'd recommend a careful review of the PDS for Pettits' Captains varnish. They are rather explicit about how to attain the best performance expectations from their excellent varnish.Look at surface prep.,application temps. and recoat times, in particular.

Cheers!

BBSebbens,

Thanks for gushing. Nice to see on a rainy Friday morning.

She's a fairly generic model of a Scandinavian workboat, not out of place from the Fresian's to the Baltic to North Cape. I've been searching for her designer or local type for the past 25 years. As far as I can tell she's close to a koster boat, found on the North Sea coast of Sweden, at the heart of all the variations on this basic type of double ender.

Glad you like her, there's more at my blog (http://www.sjogin.com/). And here's one more:

Peter I didn't want to bring this up in open forum just because I enjoy lefty's ribbing better than anyone ;) and it was fun. But as some can take things too far and far too serious. Let me put the upside down rub rail to rest. I did it INTENTIONALLY  yes I said intentionally. Why you ask, well quite simple there was a slight bend in the rail that fit the sheer section of that needed to be replaced. There was no way lefty could have figured that out so I just flipped it over and it fit much better. The way he had made it formed a harsh break in the smooth line of the sheer. So there now you all are in on the little joke.

Nice to know you keep an eye on such things. ;)

FWIW this is almost the EXACT same angle and distance as the photo you diligently researched. Only this one it was taken THIS year. !!!!

You see dry patches & varnish lifting ??????

Pete when you get some time come sailing with me I'll buy the beer and you can inspect my stewardship.

Honestly its about the dust and pollen on the deck than percieved dry or lifting varnish. FWIW she sits N/S so equal sun E to W
