I decided to give 'Dovetail' my HEIDI skiff a new color scheme. Here she is in her original garb. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid134/pe130e23cc675f7b3d04227816a544036/f77a747f.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid134/pdecc571744b5c072d2f8fa399c6d0722/f77a73ed.jpg
The new colors are from WB#31, the colors of the original Yankee skiff. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid173/p5bb19037be941f2ed0c906512d7a52cf/f3a92140.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid173/p2095f253782b260f18431bd75f1e7642/f3a92129.jpg
So far so good. The dilemma is what to do on the inside. The whole inside is currently oiled. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid173/p555d2595fd395b34e03375c5c7b5ffbb/f3a9210b.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid173/p41bef0ac43e76164aaeb5610dc2c57be/f3a920ec.jpg The Yankee color scheme is off white with the green of the shearstake on the center of the seats. My gut tells me to leave the planking oiled and paint the bottom and the seat centers. I need opinions. Rick

I agree. Don't paint until you have to - it is a nice looking interior.

Rick, I really like the oiled interior myself. A very nice looking skiff! Just curious, I noticed that there are no floorboards in this boat. Is that by design? Just thinking that if you had floorboards, you could paint them white which would add a nice contrast.

Happy sailing,
Chadd

Thanks guys. My beloved agrees with you all. Chadd, Rich Kolin did not put floorboards in his design. The boat is quite shallow but the idea of contrasting floorboards is a good one. Have to think about that......Rick

Rick, The interior looks fine the way it is.

BTW, nice shop.

I thought I saw a post by Wild Wassa (Wayne) but now it's gone. He was correct in stating that I'd like to add some color to the inside to "unify the whole" so to speak. He suggested painting the tiller the same white as the topsides. Good idea but I'd be loathe to paint the tiller on this boat; it's a shapely sliver of ash that looks pretty elegant finished bright. I thought of painting red or green stars on the foreward ends of the side benches, or just a single one on the middle plank of the sternsheets. Either way, I will leave the rest of the inside oiled. I reoiled with some teak oil I had laying around and it looks quite good. Rick

Rick,
I'd say a little paint on the inside will at least make it look like it's part of the same boat. Just paint sparingly. I love the current interior, but it looks at odds with the fully painted exterior... Didn't see Warren's post, but as I looked through your pictures, that's what I was thinking anyway... I'd probably avoid the lighter colors and use the red and green colors - that way it doesn't distract from the oiled finish elsewhere while still adding coordinating color...

Geez, if I did this with anything else, Jenny'd think I was fruity; but, put it on a boat and I'm all about making it look right. I worried over Rarus's colors this spring ad nauseum. :D Thank goodness that's done.

LS, I had been thinking that I'd insulted a fellow painter after seeing how well you had planned the colour so far and felt that you didn't need my advice at all, as you have such a good handle on the colour scheme.

Cheers Mate, I think that your choice of colour is well proportioned. Contrasting complementaries (the red and green) colours are not easy to combine generally ... your boat looks first class.

Warren.

ps, If it comes to a racing finish, I'll be the first to comment.

Not at all Warren (where did I get Wayne from?) The colors were ones I had left over from other projects. I tried to match the colors given for the paint scheme for the original Yankee Tander in WB#31. That one was painted inside as well. Maybe a green star to starboard and a red to port? Or would that be goofy?
Matt, this color talk lets us keep in touch with our feminine side ;) tongue.gif Rick

Ahoy. I only said white on the tiller because I know the temperature of our sun on coloured boat paint. It was just a trigger for something better and a top red, to have chosen, for sure. I wish I had more wood to show off ... alas.

The feminine side? ... it sounds really good. Where could she be hiding in my boat shed? ... I'm going down to the shed now to have a look, bye. In case she escapes ... I hope she has a pulse.

Warren.
