In keeping my eyes open for an engine for the 13,000lb sailoing ketch Sarabande, I have come across this engine. It is a 4-cylinder diesel and that is about all I know for sure. The people said it ran when pulled our of a very large motor sailer. These same people said it may be a Westerbeke. The casting number in the side of the block is: 37112640

Can anyone make this out? And if so, what would something like this be fairly priced at? I would try my hane a rebuilding it myself as I have tools from car engine rebuilds.

The people who own it don't know for sure what it is and can only tell you it "ran when it was pulled".

In my neighborhood that would put the price at about whatever the scrap value is. And I'm not being sarcastic or pulling your leg. With such little info to go on you are really buying a pig in a poke.

I'd say Perkins too, but maybe a 4236. The transmission looks like it has been submerged, which means it's history, same for the starter.

Any chance of doing a compression test. These engines (if it is a Perkins) are prone to have the exhaust manifold become porous and allow raw water in the cylinders, tap the exhaust manifold with a small hammer.

Hello all, smile.gif

Anyone here have the address and phone number for Perkins Marine Diesels? I think I will want to ask them directly about this engine I have found.

TIA

Even if the engine were salvagable, it might mean anywhere from $750.00 - $2,200.00 for rebuild kit. And then, if it's a Perkins. I will go back and look for another number to better ID this thing.

Many an engine have looked worse on the outside but are in good working order. If its not frozen and the injector pump and injectors work then the rest will be easier. If you drain a little out of the trans and its all oil, its a good thing.

In perkins numerology the first number is the number of cylinders and the last three the cubic inches so a 4236 is four cylinder 236 cubic inches.
