Anybody know anything about the trip? Reason I'm asking is my daughter just took off on a boat delivery and I don't even know how you get from to the other. (South Long Island Sound to Annapolis)

This should help

An online chart viewer. You can track her progress. A nice bit of the Atlantic to sail through. Where is she coming from. Do you mean the Great South Bay on the South side of Long Island, because there is no South Long Island Sound?

Through Hells Gate, NY Harbor, the Verazanno Narrows Bridge, down the NJ coast, duck into Delaware Bay, into the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal then down the Chesapeake to Annapolis. Three or four days if they stop at night. Sounds like fun.

I'm not too sure--I think the boat is from somewhere on City Island.
Looks like you have to get into New York Harbor and then head south??

Oops, probably cut through the Cape May Canal to get to Delaware Bay.

Should be a good trip. I hope she has a harness

If she's starting at City Island than Steve Bauer's route out to the harbor is it.

Thanks for the input. The route is not exactly where I thought it was, but the weather doesn't look too bad except for the fog. I think the boat is a 40-ft. something or other that does the Bermuda race regularly, with some of that crew.

My only suggestion regarding the portion from City Island to the harbor is to time it to reach Hell's Gate so you are just about at slack before low so as to avoid currents at the Gate that can run 3-4kts and make it an uncomfortable passage

I did a trip from Annapolis to Sag Harbor on Long Island in 1996 or 1997. The part from Annapolis to off shore past Atlantic City would obviously match part of your trip. A couple of things to watch out for - and I'm sure you are seeing these in your planning.
1) The C&D canal can have some tidal currents. I don't recall them being a real problem but the skipper consulted the tide tables and timed the passage accordingly.
2) We ran aground in shallows near the entrance to the Cape May canal - bugger! - but we pulled off quickly.
3) There is a bridge over the Cape May canal about 55 feet high IIRC. We attempted to pass under it (very slowly) about 0300 but the tide was too high. The top of the mast bounced off the beams. We waited until 0700 for low tide and tried again - this time successfully but just barely.
What a fun trip that was.

That's a great trip. I have fond memories of doing it aboard a 47' Nautor Swan and later in an 18'Marshall catboat. Some neat places to anchor along the way if she has the time. She should be very comfortable aboard a 40' boat.

I think the boat is Vamp, a J44 that took a first in class at Bermuda last year. I also think they are sailing straight through as a delivery, rather than stopping. Not sure, though.
