ive had one of these and used it extensively when sailing for many many years. i dont have a chart plotter and dont use a GPS so i have had to rely on my compasses for my chartwork/ded reckoning etc. anyhow, they are in my opinion, a very good compass and very easy to use. im not sure if modern day sailors would appreciate them as im not up with the latest trends and fashions. ive taken many bearings off with this compass with relative ease. but they are a little heavy i guess. so make sure the lanyard is in good condition and around your wrist! it has a light for night use. the box in the ad shows a lot of wear but thats to be expected. from the pictures it looks good provided it hasnt dried up on the inside which it doesnt appear to have done. maybe get the seller to post you a couple of more close up pictures showing just a little more detail. the interior of the box looks in good condition (thinking here that it hasnt been taken in and out a lot).
hope this helps.

Haven't we discussed this before. You seem enamoured if these things. I much prefer the hockey puck type for my (less than once a decade) use.

Would make an interesting conversation piece

These Japanese units look good enough on the outset, but damn it all to hell if they have a goddamn sense of humour.

Peter, for what it's worth, I had one on board when I was doing a lot of miles and although it looked in good order and was nice to have on board as a decoration (it had a nice mount beside the companionway) it must have been knocked around in the past and was pretty much useless. The card stuck and when it didn't stick the bearing had no resemblance to that of the mounted compass. I ended up buying myself a Plastimo compass - http://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemdetail.asp?cat=114&item=30008
and I am very fond of it, particularly when doing a lot of running fixes and so on, as you can hang it around your neck comfortably and don't need to worry about where you put it down so that it doesn't role about in a seaway while you work on the charts. When you do put it down it's rubber housing grips to the deck/chart table and it is very robust. One of the most useful and best value things that I've bought for sailing.

So, not wanting to discourage you or tell you how to suck eggs, my own experience causes me to shy away from these without knowing how it has been treated as it may not be very accurate or reliable.

what greg says is right about putting the hand bearing compass down after using etc. its bulky and you do have to worry about where you put it so it doesnt roll and get damaged.
