Hey you Mainers! I was just in Mardens and saw boat stove alcohol for $3.99 a gallon. Tru Heat was the brand name I think. This stuff is usually $20 a gallon.

For you 'from away' types Mardens is a chain of surplus and salvage stores. Mostly they just sell crap but sometimes you find good stuff like clamps and tools very cheap.

Need a stove?

Force 10 will sell you burners for propane or coal oil. (Kerosene) Why is the stove pictured on a propane tank?

Just curious because I really don't know; does alcohol burn hot enough to cook anything?

I tried an alcohol stove and it made my eyes burn so much I had to change it for propane.

Takes forever to boil a pot of water with alcohol. Not so bad if you preheat the water first.

Some alcohol stoves are more effective than others. On Magic, we had a Shipmate alcohol stove that worked well. I hear good reports on the Origo stoves.

The Origo Jamie had on Uncas cooked up some great meals. And brewed lots of coffee. If Jamie saw this thread he'd probably drive up to buy some. ;)

Where is Jamie, anyway? Has anyone heard from him?

A big alcohol burner works very well, is stable, cheap, very portable, and (because water will put out fires) safe. Don't look at the mini backpackers stoves. Look at the old timer's stoves like Origo (http://www.swego.com/stoves_alcohol.htm).

Depends on the burner design.

The Optimus/Primus silent self cleaning design can be fitted with an alcohol jet and air tube and this is an effective burner - Taylors, Force 10, Optimus.....

There is also a specific "Homestrand" pressurised alcohol stove - but not easy to find.
