Our old cape islander “Two Brothers” was finally put to rest.
We bought her as a project boat many years ago for not very much money. She was in rough shape when we bought her and her hull had been ‘glassed in a not very professional way (think “checkerboard”). After I started digging in I decided that it really wasn’t worth a lot of time and money to fix her up, so I did what was necessary and then used her for local jaunts and fishing outings.

In the fall two years ago we were worried about her sinking at our wharf so we hauled her out for the winter. Once out it became evident that the only thing allowing her to keep her shape was the water. Her keel started popping up through the floorboards and you could see that she was done. Even our neighbour who is a boatbuilder who loves to take on the “bring them back from the dead” kind of projects wasn’t willing to tackle this one.
She remained a lawn ornament (a rather large lawn ornament) until last week when we stripped her of all the useable parts (engine, shaft, prop, hydraulics, etc) and had her crushed and sent to the dump.
A sad day because we had a lot of good times and it would have been nice to see her in her old glory, but a happy day because we knew it was coming and it was a relief to have it done.
