View Full Version : Space filler between frames at the bow?

When I cut 8 feet off the forward keel I found that the first 4 frames were nailed to the side of the keel. Since there were no limber holes, the spaces beteeen the frames up to the top of the keel were filled with pitch to prevent water from standing between the frames. I am now replacing the bad frames and am thinking about what to put between the frames so they don't accumulate water in those spaces. Pitch looks VERY expensive. Can I use portland cement or perhaps poured 2-part urethane foam (I have the foam from another project)? What other material is suitable?

When you replace the frames, cut 1/4" off the bottom of em.This will give you the limber holes needed, just run a bead of something down between the plank and deadwood to keepwater out.

For the amount of pitch you need seems to my you could find a roofer to break you off a chunk for not so much. I have a hundred lb block I got for about $60. Let me know what you need and I can ship you some for the cost of the postage.

The frames should meet the keel.

I didn't mean to cut the frame off before it reaches the keel, just bob the tail.

Cutting a bit off the frame tips sounds like one way to go, but that leaves a very small limber hole. I will consider it.
