Does anyone know who I should talk to about getting lumber in Onatrio? I need a lumber yard that understands boat building requirements. I would be willing to deal with lumberyards in BC or out east if I need to. I will be building the boat near Toronto.

Thanks

You could try Noah's marine in Mississauga. They mostly carry marine ply but they have some board stock.
Good luck. I think the only way to get respectable boatbuilding wood in Ontario is to cut it yourself. My neighbor has a 90 year old white oak in his yard. Maybe late some night.....

What kind of lumber?Between here and Waterloo are about 30 sawmills(large and small, myself, ahem, included),if you need local wood.In Goderich, there is a place called Jeffery's,which is an old time lumberyard that also deals with boat lumber and plywood. If red cedar is what you want,The House of Cedar is in K-W somewhere. They may be expensive.
Have fun

Ron,

I have been asking this question offline for a while, I now see that you are the man to ask. I am looking for a lumber mill in ontario preferably located somewhere between Toronto and Parry Sound close to Hwy 400/69. Any ideas? I have asked at the Parry Sound chamber of commerce and they are clueless--is there a list somewhere of all lumbermills is Ontario? I am looking for Tamarack for siding a cottage (on an island near Parry Sound) and Northern White Cedar for my Herreshoff restoration.

David.

Yesterday I talked to my friend Sunny, who's dad has a fishing camp over by Grundy Lake Park.He knows of a mill called Lahay(sp)Lumber, but it is near Noelville. He was going to talk to his dad,who would know of all the places to get wood(his words). We shall see.
I don't know of any sawmill list that would be relevant to guys like us,because most mills that would land on such a list probably wouldn't want to deal with "goddam retail customers".That's a quote from a mill owner who produces 20K board feet/day(one tractor trailer load, big deal).Probably the best thing to do would be to call the local lumber yard and ask where to get LOCAL cedar. If they're decent, they'll point you in the right direction. If they're pricks, you'll find out right away.
Last fall when we were on our way to Killarney,I noticed a large mill and yard on the east side of Hwy.69.Near Britt, maybe.
Now we wait for Sunny

Ron et al,

The Noelville possibility sounds good--if you hear anything let me know. I checked-out the place near Britt, their answering machine says that they don't do retail anymore and that people should contact Muskoka Lumber in Bracebridge. Next time I get a chance I'll visit Bracebridge and Muskoka lumber -- I haven't been to Bracebridge in the last 15 years in fact I have avoided it ever since the beautiful people found Muskoka!
Thanks to all,
David.

So it was Britt,I remember seeing a sign with the same message on the gate.
The pretty people have always been in Muskoka. The real problem is that they're spreading.
Still waiting for Sunny.........

Go to www.woodweb.com (http://www.woodweb.com) and you will find more than you need. You can either post for lumber or sawmills. They have a lumber exchange that you can post your needs for lumber or use thier lumber forum to find a mill.

Good luck

For boat builders, there's nothing better than a rough cut mill. You can buy it green and get picky about what you buy.

Miller Lumber in Barrie (strategically mid-way between Toronto and Parry Sound) has lots of rough cut, cut on site. Not really a boat builders yard, but they're way cheaper.

Hwy 90 west of Barrie (Angus turnoff) about 5 min.

Also, try Bass Lake Lumber, on Hwy. 12 west of Orillia. Similar setup.
