Here are two canoes I made. Posted them and some others in the bilge and it was suggested I repost them up here.

Seat slides to trim canoe. Angled down 2" at the front so it can be slid back and your butt leaned against it comfortably when knealing. High enough for feet and legs to slide under for knealing.
Seat, thwarts and decks are cherry. Slotted gunwhales are black ash.

On the forms being stripped. 18' Chestnut Prospector to the left. Built with a friend who uses it once a year for gathering wild rice.

First time on the water with a little girl who wanted a ride.

This is a "skeleton" of the same canoe. Made on the forms before I stripped the real one. It is black ash finished with 20 coats of gloss lacquer. The pieces were ripped from extra spindles left over from building the staircase you see here and one other. The stair design changed after I made 150 spindles so I had many extras. This hangs 16' above the ground floor in my front room. Loft office where I'm typing is right behind the half wall with the boat models. As you might imagine from the interior decorating I am a bachelor.

This years project will be a 17 1/2' tandem day tripper made from virola wood. Decks and thwarts will be curly maple if some thing more pretty doesn't come to mind.

Thanks for looking, Al.

Actually, two thumbs up! Way up! But then, solo strippers are my kind of boats.

That "skeleton" is great! I'd sure like to see some more pictures if you ahve them - or at least a description of how you joined the frames to keel and gunwales.

Beautiful job there Al, if you paddle that around in right places you might not be a bachelor for long. Very nice.

Thanks guys. Drake, I steamed the ribs and then tacked them down at the ends on the stations set on the strongback that was set up for stripping the real thing. Then I attached the gunwhales and the keel [all 3/4x1/4] to the ribs with a dab of epoxy at each joint and put it a single #6 brass screw to hold it while the epoxy set and for a little decoration. Pulled it off the stations and clipped the little sharp end of the tacks off. Thwarts are the same size as the gunwhales and held in place by a single screw at each end. Hung with 20# monofilament fish line that is invisible from the ground floor. Can barely see it from where I'm sitting now about 10' away at the same level it is.
If you are not familiar with the stations on a strongback I could get a picture for you. Easier to show than describe.

GaryThe "right" place to paddle doesn't seem to be here. One son and his wife live in Anchorage, you reckon the prospecting would be better up there? smile.gif

Yes
Bring that canoe up and spend some time in Homer.
If nothing else you'll have a great time.

Nice work. What's the seat ? Kinda looks like cane, but maybe not.

The seat is 1/8" nylon cord. My oldest strip canoe is 22 years old, has the same seat and I just restrung the seat last winter. They are kept inside out of the sun except when in use so that helps it last. My friend with the Prospector strung his with red cord. It looked nice but I prefer white.
I have heard that if you weave one late at night after a few Leinenkugels that you better check often to make sure you haven't skipped a hole because if you find that out only when you are done you might be pretty disgusted. I heard.

The models aren't half models. They are all there, both sides. They sit on shelves.
I would like to tell you they are ones I spent hundeds of hours making but I didn't. 2 are from E Bay, 1 from a yard sale.

E bay always has a lot of them. Some terribly ugly and crude, some pretty nice. Mine were each less than $100.00.

Great looking boats. Also like the yard and property, as well as the 'shop' - first rate all around.

You're welcome to come visit my wife and I in central NH and paddle the flat water ponds and lakes around here.

cheers

Very Nice, Alteran!

I really like the skeleton idea. I sometimes daydream of a home in which a wooden canoe rests above the rafters of the Living Room.

A finished :stripper, canoe or kayak, is like a piece of sculpture.
