View Full Version : Le Tonkinois over epoxy
Do any of you boat builders have any experience useing Le Tonkinois over epoxy sealed wood? It would be conveineint for me to use because of the easy application but I do not know if it would have sufficent UV protection. I build small boats that are tipically stored under cover when not in use. I am not interested about any other brands of varnish. I am aquainted with traditional brands of varnish and am interested only with specfic experience with Le Tonkinois varnish over epoxy.
Thanks! DRB

You can contact the LeTonkinois rep at www.tarsmell.com, (http://www.tarsmell.com,) I think.
In tangent to another conversation, he and I touched upon the use of LeTonkinois over epoxy. I don't remember the specifics, but as I recall the jist, it wasn't a great idea in his mind.
Really though, contact him. He's more than willing to talk about his products.

I used LeTonkinois on my spars and really like it. But I didn't put it over epoxy, so no help. Sorry.

I don't beleive that'll work. LeTonk is a more like an oil and not a varnish. The strength of it lies in the fact that it permeates the wood, which it wouldn't do on epoxy.

Martin, that would be true for the first layer. The next layer would go on cured varnish. As a substrate, is it any different from cured epoxy? Maybe that is what should be investigated.

FWIW, the 'tarsmell' link to 'American Rope & Tar' doesn't work for me [there's an extra '.']
Try American Rope and Tar (http://www.tarsmell.com)
