Where can I buy a 2"OD X 1.5" ID X 48" long Fiberglass tube?

Should be able to buy that from your local chandlery - they sell various tube sizes for stern tubes, tho' the smallest my local places sell is 2" ID x 2-1/2" OD. Or, McMaster-Carr sells 1-1/2"x 2" FRP tube in 60"
lengths.

Gee, Michael, that's a lot less money than the G-10 I've been buying from McMaster. What's the material, pultruded vinylester?
Anybody got any other sources for FRP tube?

This might be worth considering:

G-10 was covered in an article in Wooden Boat #206.

Dunno what it is, Jim; I haven't ordered any. I suspect that you are right about it's composition. Probably has little structural strength, but would do as a shaft-bore liner in a wooden skeg.

Why so thick? That's not a particularly good formula for light strong fiberglass. It's either incredibly strong or incredibly weak. Is this for a bowsprit or do you have some other sinister use planned?

You can purchase fiberglass tube with inside bores of 1, 1.25, 1.5 etc, every 1/4 inch in 6 foot lengths made of G-10 fire retardant glass epoxy from numerous sources that deal in fiberglass tubes/extrusions. I have several pieces of 2 inch but they were cut for me at 24 inch lengths for an autotune antenna system for HF radios.....wall thicknesses 3/16 to 1/4 inch

Gert:

I have a spare 33" length of fiberglass exhaust tube -- 1.75" id X 2" od -- free -- if you can make it work. I'm on Vancouver Island and can easily mail it to you.

There are no chandleries in Vancouver.

"There are no chandleries in Vancouver"

I suggest a visit to Martin Marine on 1st Street near Lonsdale in North Vancouver. Maybe the last of its kind.

Exhaust tube is easy to find in the Vancouver area, but thicker stern tube is another matter. My 1.25" X 1.75" stern tube had to be ordered from the east coast.

Been there lots, great store. The "old guy" refused to sell me manila rope for Carina (thank God; I didn't know); good source for misc bronze stuff. But when he runs out of stock that will be the last.

They didn't have my tube either, nor any leads. Defoe on Powel St. didn't have any thing this small. (never build a small boat that thinks it's a big boat)

I did score though: Creative Fiberglass in Port Kells.
2 X 1.5 X 48 $65.00 CA. :D

I am redoing GS' stern tube cause I had made more assumtions than research, Small boat with small motor and small prop does not = small shaft. Though most here would probably argue that 1" is small; but hey this is how we learn.:o

But I did get to design a great shaft hole drilling "sled" that I wish I had thought of earlier; accurate to a mm.
