View Full Version : KEELSON

I am restoring a 35 year old wooden van der Stadt Primaat yacht (24 feet) design in Cape Town South Africa. I have removerd the mild steel ballast keel and am attending to some rot in the upper reinforcement on the inside above the keel and false keel. I plan to remove as much of the upper reinforcement (oak) as possible and to laminate 5mm (metric) marine ply in epoxy on top of the wooden keel to build up to the required replacement thickness of about 22 mm using a brick and mortar interleaved style end, over-lap system. The length needing attention is about 1.5 metres (five feet). This will entail removing bad wood under some of the bearers and removel of springs.

The question is: is this a bad idea as the keel and false keel are in good order and should I be replacing with oak instead? Any thoughts will be apreciated.

Of course to do the work in ply will be a lot easier.
Cape Town.
