An interesting 1965 book that reviews selected aspects of sailing yacht designs from artistic and scientific vantage points. Perhaps dated, but the commentary and colloquy from such notables as Olin Stephens, Al Mason, Gilbert Wyland, Mandell Rosenblatt, Halsey Herreshoff, Cyrus Hamlin, Jay Paris, John Gardner, Laurent Giles, Pierre de Saix and others followed by responses to their comments by Robert Henry (one of the authors) is wonderful to read. It's like being a fly on the wall as these designers talk about what draws them to and challenges them about yacht design.:D

That's one of boats that's caught my eye for years, but I've never had a chance to sail.

The Navy Luders Yawls were fun to sail. I was quite new to sailing at the time and didn't have any experience on other boats except for Navy knockabouts, but I remember really enjoying sailing on the Luders Yawls. They were pretty spartan down below though.

I recall how spartan and un-yachty they were, too. When we first stepped aboard the pipe berths were bound up smartly, sail bins packed tight with dry sails, everything was finished in hard, white paint and cleaned to the tiniest corner. They were the freshest smelling boats I've ever been on.

Ron, those are the current Navy 44s.

the Luders design was the previous generation, currently in custody of the USCGA.

I didn't know they went to the CG Academy. That's good to hear.

Mr. Garr,

When did you sail on Leders Yawls? I sailed on them in the early 70s.

Not all of them; or at least some have moved on from there:

The Center for Wooden Boats used to have one. I think it's owned by Evergreen State College now.

Fantastic boat to sail. I remember stuffing a 1,000 sq ft 'chute down below before we got hit by a squall.

Thanks! The 102 page Academy SOPs for the yawl (pdf) are worth a skimming.
