In the '135 cu inch engine' topic there is a restored 120 4cyl mercruiser motor posted by Bill Childs. I didn't want to take that topic in a different direction so I started a new one. I have a '60 Mercrusier 110 4cyl engine. I was told that in 1960 Mercury sent several boat companies one of these prototype drives to build a boat around and test. I have the Penn Yan test boat from this. The motor went into production in '62 or '63. I started the restoration of this boat in '99. Here is a photo of what I started with. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid198/p0920f4822b543ca9379b1fd334cb5d76/f0da486e.jpg
I have all the hardware as well. The boat had to have a new stem, transom, ribs, and plywood bottom which I have done. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid198/p21052c4ad4c5d6ce1a364713de79eda5/f0da4864.jpg
I then repainted the hull. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid198/p2713a12c2f00e80fd1599d037bcf7dc8/f0da4857.jpg
Shortly after that I became ill and have not been able to work on my boats until this past september. The boat was put in my storage tent where it has been ever since. I plan to pull it out this spring and finish it. Last month I restored the dash, made a new wiring harness and sewed new seat covers. Most of the interior trim parts are in the basement shop awaiting finishing. After the new year I plan to bring the motor and drive in to go over. The motor ran when it was removed from the boat. It turns over freely and has good compression. What source or sources are parts available for restoration. Am I going to be able to get a gasket set and items like that for this. I feel alot better about taking this motor apart if I know where top get parts.
Thanks, Charlie

Interesting info about the Mercruiser Charlie. I checked Thompson Bros. Boat catalogs. They offered Volvo Penta 80 HP I/O's in the 1960 line. In '61 they added Eaton Powernaut 85 HP and 100 HP; Seapower 85 HP and 100 HP in addtion to the Volvo.

In 1962 they still had the Volvo plus 111 HP Gray & Eaton but the others were dropped. 1963 was the first time that any Mercruiser's appeared.

Thompson started experimenting with Inboard/Outboard power in 1958 and by late 1959 they were a regular part of production.

1961 was the fist time any inboard/outboard's appeared in the Cruisers, Inc. catalog: 85 HP Volvo and 100 HP Interceptor.

Grady-White Boats also offered I/O's for the first time in 1961: Volvo and Interceptor.

Do you have a picture of the engine?

Where on this motor would I look for a serial number. I find a casting number on the block.

From this pix it seems like the SN tag is large and obvious.

Dell my motor does not have a plate like that on the rear motor mount or anywhere that I can find.

Nice boat Charlie - keep up the great work.

I've had good luck with these people for engine parts: http://www.ebasicpower.com/

The serial number on the later engines is on a tag pinned to the bolck on the stbd side aft where the bell housing mates up to it.

Thanks for the photos.

Oh yeah Charlie, for simple things like head gaskets and such for these little engines I go to my local Napa auto parts. They don't carry the marine gaskets in stock but they can get them very quickly.

Charlie,

I have a mercruser much like yours (in a cottage boat used for simple transportation and made of that other stuff) and it always struck me as absurd that the only way to change the fan belt on these engines is by taking off the front engine mount thus screwing up the outdrive alignment.

From the pictures your engine looks a lot like a marine conversion of a Chevy/GM four cylinder engine. I think these were called "Iron Duke" engines, and were just a four cylinder version of the six cylinder 250 cubic inch six that Chevy made for years, and was the basis for the Mercruiser "165" engine.
The four cylinder was a lot less common, but was used in some early-sixties Chevy II cars, and in some industrial equipment.
I think I remember an Allis-Chalmers swather that was powered by one.
OMC used this engine in a 1960's I/O rig.
Last time I looked for parts for a 250 Chevy they were readily available from NAPA or the local machine shop. Cylinder heads are getting hard to find.

The four cylinder Chevy was and still is very common. The 2.5L Mercruiser (110 and 120 hp) is no longer made but has been replaced by the 4 cyl 3.0L.
The Chevy 250 is a six cylinder (165 hp). There are so many of these old four and six cylinder engines lying around that you don't have to go very far to find 'em. Parts everywhere.

Bill I also have in my collection a '65 Penn Yan 'EI' model Explorer which has a Mercruiser 140 6-cyl 194 cid with optional power tilt. This motor uses two carbs one 'B' and one 'BC'. The information I have from Kiekhaefer Corp. is that the prototype motor is a 153 cid. I do have the installation information, service guide, and transom cut layout prints for the prototype motor all dated 1/5/60.

Here are some photos of the '65 6cyl 140hp Mercruiser I/O in the Penn Yan Explorer I am working on. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid200/p8e341719a18a8a09f82268ef3a941b71/f05cebed.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid200/p107d2f61e0727e167ea960f7482e880c/f05cebdc.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid200/pe49bd32445402eb35a0b9e0d49c63339/f05cebd3.jpg
