Good one Carl ... and its well into Tuesday here (pushing 9:00am)

I'll propose a Kiwi boat for your next one ... the Kittycat - designed by Jim Young. Worth looking at...

OZ? !!!! Those are Zephyrs and starlings!!.

Those Des Townson Zephyrs and their sisters the Mistrals, are beautiful and elegant little things with a very strong class following. Always owned by enthusiasts .
Des Townson was a friend of mine I'm extremely fortunate to say,but regretfully, I also have to say he passed away late last year.
Des worked very hard and not only designed his boats , but often physically built them as well. Zephyrs, Mistrals, a 22 ft ply keeler called a Pied piper class (which is still raced hard and is often regarded as an entry level race keeler here) , and many keel yachts through to about 40 odd feet typically. His electron RC yacht was very sucessful for him.
This easter ( if we're able to get away) will be the first in several years we'll miss him at the Pardeys and mahurangi club rally at North Cove kawau. I just feel very lucky to have met him and become friends. You could not have a mundane conversation with the man, every chat was full of perspective and inquiry . ( largely boats but all sorts of aesthetic values)

He didn't like Waione in aesthetic terms, but he did like my little kids dinghies,( the last two anyway) and he thought Riada was perfect.

" I've been rowing around her John, and I just can't find fault, not that I should , she's designed by one of the worlds best".:D

I met Jim Young about 3 weeks ago Ian.. fan tastic!great body of work including a version of the LFH sailing machine complete with canting keel in about 1950 or so IIRC.His later boats are still raced hard and are reknowned for fingertip control right around the polar diagram.

Good column, but I'm having trouble working out the point of Windfinder...particularly the windvane thingy someone is wearing on their website.

Oh, I *know* he was Kiwi! His loss is a big one. I keep hoping Rebecca Hayward will write about him for us...

Please post future comments in the "comments" section of www.WoodenBoat.com/boat. But also feel free to post them here. I don't actually check here everyday. I should, but I don't. My day job has a way of consuming a lot of my time, somehow.

I'm kind of surprised that Opti diehards haven't had anything to say yet... Do you think that MEANS anything?

Let's all go wooden boating....
