We got to a point in the building process where it was worth taking the time for a few pictures (this is happens pretty frequently, but I suppose the boss might get upset if I didn't actually spend some time building the boat). Anyway, the deck frame is done, and the last two planks were still on the way, and we were all spending a lot of time looking at the boat from the quarter, so I took a picture of the view for posterity:

Actually several pictures, since that's a composite of four shots. It's tough taking pictures of a big boat in a small shop....

Yesterday, we opened the doors of the shop for the first time since fall so the Rankin's boom truck could come in and haul out the excess planking stock and move the teak logs in. Also the first time I could get far enough away for a good shot.

The starboard sheer plank is on. Time for a shutter party soon...

The same truck also delivered the engine a few days earlier. Amazing that 175 horsepower can come in such a small package:

That's the boss, Nigel "Twig" (The Expatriate Missile) Bower looking on.

And, since I can't resist (I love this picture, for some reason), a parting shot:

Nice shots AND a nice shop too!
Who is doing the corking? I see those tail ends in shot one.

The "corking" is being done by a fellow named John Maritado. I was told recently he turned 81 last month, which was a surprise since he looks 61 and is still going strong. He's a third-generation caulker.. His father employed most of the caulkers in the City Island boat yards (Nevins, etc.) and built Stanley Rosenfeld's boat.

A free plug for Maine Maritime Museum (I'm in no way connected): If anyone wants to learn how to caulk from a super nice and knoledgeable individual, John's teaching a caulking workshop in Bath sometime in early April.

What a great thing to have a guy like to do your caulking! (Sorry for the "terminology", Dave... I'm still a Cape Cod "Yankee" at heart...)

Is he the same guy "WoodenBoat" wrote up a while back by any chance? I really hope a bunch of folk take advantage of that workshop. Seems to me that's a skill that should be passed on pronto!

(Amazing progress, btw. I'd love to see her in person one day...)
