Some truly wonderful stuff here as well as some overpriced stuff that you will never use.
I found that the first thing[s] I needed when I started to build my collection of toys..er ..ah tools was that I needed some means of taking ACCURATE measurements. So I first bought my digital caliper and a set of calipers and dividers. [along with a half dozen other items that I just couldn't possibly do without !
Cheers and don't say I didn't warn you !!

The only option for country is USA. There were options to use Canadian provinces but not to include the name of the country. I wonder if it will show up?

They used to have a showroom on the 2nd fl of a nondescript building on 6th ave and like 4th st. in lower NYC. Walking in one day and drooled all over the place, they didn't even ask me to leave ;)

Rant Warning: I wish Garrett Wade would decide what kind of company they want to be.

Thay are starting to sell all kinds of "stuff" like garden tools, model kits, that kind of reminds me of Brookstone when they started their slide down hill to the "sky mall" catalogs.

I like Woodcraft (there is a store close by) and Veritas better.

Garrett Wade today is just a shadow of the original company. Their first catalog was an amazing thing, full of well written how-to sidebars, beautiful photography, and much more selection with an emphasis on quality.

With no garden tools.

The copy in the newer catalogs is often hilariously bad, as though the author forgot his point mid-paragraph. They have become the Sharper Image of tools, with a few exceptions.

Yes, I have a GW catalog from the mid 80's and there is no comparison with the current offerings. Go to www.toolsforworkingwood.com (http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com) and www.leevalley.com (http://www.leevalley.com) for an glimpse of GW's former glory. I think Joel was involved with GW in the past. Also www.thebestthings.com (http://www.thebestthings.com) and, of course www.lie-nielsen.com (http://www.lie-nielsen.com) Rick

I am fortunate enough to have a Lee Valley store in town. Actually it's in Halifax but I work in Halifax so I can stop by from time to time. It's really amazing when you first enter the store. Nothing on the shelves is "for sale" yet it all is. You brows the store, decide what you want, go to what I can only describe as a kiosk and fill in a little form. Then you take a number and wait in line. At the checkout counter, they take your little slip of paper and go in the back to get your stuff. It's a huge warehouse back there. Shortly thereafter, they come back and you pay for your purchase. (And let me tell you, you PAY for your purchase. I find it a tad expensive sometimes but the quality is top notch.) They have several copies of woodworking, gardening (Sorry) and of course WB magazine for sale. There's also a book section. They sell reprints of all sorts of classic books like Wood Ship Construction Mechanical dictionaries, D'arcy Lever's Sheet Anchor..... the list goes on. I love that store. My brother Andrew who lives in Victoria is looking forward to the store they are supposed to be opening there soon. Till then, he can simply look at the cataloge and ask me to look at stuff for him. Man I'm a nice guy eh?

I'm afraidi Garrett Wade is going the way of Victoria's Secret! The catalog used to be fantastic, but now it's just beginning to become a bore. Once the brand name is established, they all start to "diversify" and it just isn't the same anymore.

Speaking of which Dan, we'll have to make a pilgrimage there over easter... I still have that gift card, and when you travel with a lap infant... they allow you to double your luggage allotment for no extra money!!!
