HI there everyone in fellow boat land.
I am a Boat builder from the land down under. i have had a few requests for a 21" version of a 14" Penobscot (Arch Davis design)which i have built 2 of now. i was just wondering if anyone out there has seen plans or if anyone has scaled up a set of plans to do such an extension. i would love to hear any suggestions anyone has or any sneaky little tricks that may have snuck past me smile.gif

Cheers
Emm

DON'T DO IT, unless you're a qualified Naval Architect, and can calculate what the results that the enlargement will have on all the forces acting on the boat. I just finished a Penobscot 14, and it handles beautifully under row or sail. But I wouldn't want to venture how it would do if you enlarged it. There's also a 17' version of the Penobscot, but as Arch notes in the study plans, the 17 may be a bigger sister to the 14, but it's still a completely different boat.

21' is a very, very big open boat (by modern standards) and is not something that should be done by simply stretching a 14' design.

Ask Arch Davis to draw you a 21' Penobscot.

Or ask Don Kurylko to draw you a 21' Alaska.

Or consider any of a number of other designs.

Or, grinning, a 21' Caledonia yawl wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Every pun intended. 21' would only be an 8% stretch for the Caledonia yawl. With Iain Oughtred's blessing, of course.

Better yet, just build her as drawn at 19'-6". You will know that you have a boat that works.

There's a 110% Eun Mara in AussieLand. :D Iain gave his blessing on that one. I'm thinking about it.

This is the sort of thing that brought out the finest in Bob Cleek. (sentimental sigh)
