Alice Cochran hosted a small TSCA row at the Spaulding Center in Sausalito. Due to dire weather predictions, only two boats showed up - Alice and her friend David borrowed the Center's class-built pram and I brought my Cosine Wherry. We rowed up into the Sausalito Canal and tied up at a restaurant dock for a break, then headed back to the Center with the tide and wind helping.

I handed the camera off for some shots from Alice and David. The repositioned / temporary thwarts in my wherry certainly balance the boat better, with the bow slightly up in nearly all load & crew positions.

It started raining on and off as we passed the houseboat fleet, and I was glad for my full foulies and new rubber boots -

Once back I got a private tour from Mark Welther, as one of the docents was being trained. Several weekend classes were in session, so the Center was quite busy.

Here's the drafting floor in the loft -

The mast for the Copperhead was being refinished -- with just a few clamps and other hardware under the table -

They opened the loft door to show how the spars are moved in and out of the main building, and it also gives a great view of the yard in the rain -

Lots of great old tools and "working-boatyard stuff" -- what's the pitchfork for, one wonders...?

Great pictures, Thorne!
Nice to see the inside of Spaulding Center. I tried to stop by once, not during touring hours, and couldn't get a peek.

That is a great tour indeed. It certainly must have made your "rainy day". Thanks!

Are there any Kit Africa boats still in Sausalito? Kit used to build sailing and rowing dories on the old Spaulding property back in the 70's

Don't know about Kit's boats, but I'll ask the next time I'm in contact with the Spaulding folks.

It actually wasn't nearly as cold as the previous weekend at Lake Chabot, just a lot damper at times. And of course that is "cold" by California standards = having to wear more than a T-shirt and shorts...

I haven't been down there since Myron passed away. He was a great guy. The place doesn't seem to have changed much. That's good!

Thanks, Dave. I love your posts about your outings. Now that spring is here it won't be too long until we can get back out on the water again.

Great shots Thorne. Wish we could have made it. Instead I ended up using some of my white oak lumber stock to repair a Craftsman table. Dodging rain drops in the back yard "shop". SWIMBO is happy. We saw Alice and David on Sunday at the Golden Gate Tall Ship Society board meeting, they said the pram went great, but you had an advantage in the current with that slippery Cosine.

Wonderful! Thanks for sharing it all with us, Thorne.

Pitchfork?....well, when it all gets tooooo overwhelming, you can just pitch it all out and start again! ;)
