I'm drawing a sail plan for my soon to be completed Bob's Special cedar strip canoe (15'x36"). The 35 sq ft lateen's center of effort appears to be directly over the center thwart, where the leeboard will be placed. This plan calls for a mast partner built into the forward seat (the crossmember closest to midship). My question for all you canoe sailors is: What to do? 1)Should I move the leeboard just aft of the middle thwart? 2)or move the overall placement of forward seat toward midship? 3)or build the mast partner into the seat crossmember nearest the bow? 4)choose a larger sail, thereby moving the CE past middle thwart? Or What?
