View Full Version : Teak Dowels?

Anybody know who might stock 1 1/8 inch diameter teak dowels? I have a couple of old Cheoy Lee bronze cleats that require a wood rod running through two bronze supports. The wood is pretty well gone, and I'd like to put them back into service as cleats for my spring lines.

My googling has come up empty - I only need about 28" or so total. Ideas? (Yes, I understand this could be the excuse I've been looking for to buy a lathe!)

Thanks.

Ben

Here's what the cleats look like: http://www.classicmarine.co.uk/product.asp?product=96&cat=40&ph=cat&keywords=&recor=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=

Best of luck. If you want to buy a lathe, go for it, otherwise a block plane and a spar gauge will do it. 8 sides, 16, 32 then round and sandpaper.:D

There always nice sharp pocket knives to whittle teak into a dowel as you wanted...
Imagine all those lovely teak toothpicks you'll have, after you finish..
Be the first in your neighborhood to have geeenuinize teak toothpicks

The cleat in the link you supplied doesn't look round. It looks oval.

How about osage orange or black locust?

Yeah, the cleat in the link is a sistership, as it were ... mine is round. Hadn't thought about osage orange or locust, but I'm open. Trouble is, none of the online places I found (including Midwest Dowel) seem to have any of these woods in the 1 1/8 size. I could get mahogany, but I want something that doesn't require a finish ...

Ipe? I could turn them for you if you find a wood you want to use. Actually I have some locust...

I'd use something stronger than teak.

Here's the cleat in question. I'm thinking the dowel should be about 14" long. Nice of you to offer, Steven. Do you think Ipe would be a good choice if no finish is to be used? I'm not really familiar with it. I just looked up black locust, and it is supposed to be rot resistant and strong, too. If it would be okay without a finish, then it sounds good.

C'mon, you know you want your own lathe. I've spent many a happy hour knee-deep in sawdust making nothing much in particular in front of my lathe.
