Perhaps the solution to forestalling viewers from (automatically) seeing The Bilge when getting Today's Posts has arrived. Unless it's the only way it seems like a blunt instrument.... but... it will work for me on a Mac: from the main forum page Command Return each forum I want to see in order to avoid even seeing the Bilge 'new posts'. Then I can just click on each forum without backtracking to refresh other fora. Good enough.

Hard to know.
Dave the vbulletin mod I mentioned over in the WBF Losing Focus thread simply provides a pull down menu when you select New Posts and lets the user select whether to look at all new posts , All new on-topic (ie Above the Bilge) or All off-topic (in WBF the Bilge) posts.
As far as I know that 1st modification does not require the establishment of a second option I mentioned which was the creation of the Bilge User Group. If the second option were implemented only folks that had requested to join the Bilge users group via their User CP would see the Bilge Posts whether they were a member or simply a visitor not yet registered.
I'm not sure if I am successfully articulating this so maybe it's best to just keep quiet. Sorry if I have added to the confusion. :D

Give Scot a break, He may be doing things that will improve our enjoyment of the WBF, or just maintenance to maintain our current level of enjoyment.
The forum has been relatively stable and the performance has been very acceptable. Thanks, Scot!

When you get back from engineering I need a left handed smoke bender for the CN. Winds out of the north today so be sure to get the right one.
Besides it never hurts to clear the limbers now does it! Thanks for the tease Paul.
You all have a great day, I need to get back out to the 75 degree afternoon here in NC.

Scot,
Here's one more vote for the return of New Posts. Why
not just exclude the Bilge from that feature?

Russ,
He's been asked to do just that in the past and replied that the software doesn't have that option, but perhaps they are working on it anew or waiting to see how much gnashing of teeth there is about the change.
For those who have Macs there's a fairly simple and rapid work-around that I've posted in #3 above. (There may be a similar method for WinWhatever.)
I'm just hoping folks cease posting 'Above The Bilge' threads in The Bilge if this is the way it's to be.
make the Bilge "ignorable" for those who cant control themselves.

From John's post #5 above it seems the software does have that option.
Sometimes I wish the thread originator could delete posts inside a thread. I'd delete Phillip's post #2 from this thread. Some people just have no self control. That kind of childish stuff should go.:(

From what I've read no one "officially" knows. No Scot type moderator has said / written any thing official. We , collectively has conjectured many possibilities.
So this would be similar to military officier doing contingency planning. For those who follow the civilian thinking on military planning.
The short answer is no one is sure at this time.
With all this chatter about "new posts" I may try using it , IF that function / feature is restored to service. :)

Steven, maybe an option to have your posts limited to anyone not on your ignore list?
rbgarr
03-08-2009, 06:48 PM
The Ignore list is useful if you never want to see what a particular person has to say on any topic. Some make useful contributions above the Bilge when they stop by there, and those posts you do want to see.

If this (http://www.advrider.com/forums/search.php?searchid=127252) forum uses the same software as the WBF (which it seems like it does), then there should be an option of separating the bilge from the above board.
Click on the link above- it's a motorbike forum, you can click on 'new posts' which is the new results of all the above board posts, then 2 options to the left there is 'Jo Momma', which is basically their version of the bilge, with a couple of subforums within it.
I can't imagine what is happening here now is anything but an unwanted glitch- no forum would deliberately disable the search feature...

Rbgarr, I sent you a PM to support my post # 5. Did you happen to look at it?
Scot may have provided that answer in the past but it is no longer the case.
For others who may be interested here is the text I sent to Dave.
===>
Afternoon Dave,
If you are interested in seeing how the New Posts feature I referred to works in the other forum I spoke of you can go to www.anything-sailing.com (http://www.anything-sailing.com/) and take a look.
If you don't sign up you will only see Todays Posts. Try that and note that you will not see their Off-Topic sections as a visitor.
If you register for membership but don't request access to Off-Topic, you will see the New Posts option without any Off-Topic posts. Note also that you do not see Off- topic listed as a forum if you have not requested to join the Off-Topic user group.
If you register and want to see Off-Topic, go to the User CP page, then look for the Group Membership option on the menu and follow the instructions.
This is a recent forum that a number of folks are trying to get going. It's about a week old now so the content and membership is young but growing. Content takes time to develop as you know. I am not affiliated with the forum other than being a member.
I just thought it might give you a better idea of what I have been describing to the WBF gang.
Best Regards from a 75 degree NC day!
John

This is in no way an attempt to recruit new members at another site but it will show you what is possible. The admin that put up this new site had the software in his possession about 24 hrs and had never worked with it prior to putting up the site. He has offered to assist the WB Admin with making the modification if they are interested.
It may well be that WB see little or no value in making the effort and that's ok with me but the software is very capable. It is used widely around the internet and there are new enhancements being made by third party developers and most are available at no cost.

Steven,
Like many of this band of hooligans, many of the folks there frequent many forums. Some are in fact SA fans but also Sailnet and a number of others. Personally I don't enjoy the SA site but that's my preference not a judgment.
Who knows if it will become anything worthwhile. It's early and certainly not as well rounded as this esteemed hole in the internet but there is after all only 1 WBF :D.
Regardless of what you lads might think of the crew over there, the site setup will show you some of the possibilities we have been talking about.
Warning - If you do go there politics, guns, war, sex and all that are in the Off Topic sections. You have to request access to see or post to any of the off topic forums. Not to keep you from going there but to shut you up and keep you from whining about the content if you go there and don't like it.
The predominant political mindset there is at the opposite end of the spectrum from what would appear to be the WBF posture.
Carry on ,
John
