Friday, March 20 - 22. That is 3 weekends from now.

http://www.portlandcompany.com/boatShow/

Doesn't always appear to be a best time for meeting up at the show.
But watch here for people's times and days and sometimes a bunch collects up at the lunch room after passing by Thad.

Steven and Mary Bauer usually host a get together Saturday night.

For those who haven't been, this one happens to be the best boat show in the world.

OK, here's the scoop. We weren't sure about the Saturday night dinner but now it's officially on. It turns out my daughter's birthday is Saturday. But she's having her party on Friday night and I'm having my party on Saturday. Yep, it's not just an Elbow Bending Symposium it's also a 50th Birthday Party! So y'all are invited! Saturday night after the Show, be there!

The seminar schedule is not out yet.

SWMBO and I are thinking of taking a ride up for the show. Where is a good place to stay?

I was thinking of the Sheraton, because we must have passed that poker chip building a for a lifetime, and have always said that I wanted to stay there.

I do not know if it is in the price range, though.

A Power Point Presentation on the restoration of the 1894 Essex- built National Historic landmark Schooner ERNESTINA at the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard. She has had a long and varied career as a fishing schooner, arctic exploration vessel, World War II naval vessel, Cape Verdean packet, and the official tall ship of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. ERNESTINA has ridden out storms, been dragged over shoals, burned, sunk, and cursed with neglect. Her survival is not only a credit to her builders, her captains and her crews, but also to a great many people that have made monumental efforts to maintain, repair, and even rebuild the vessel. The rehabilitation of the Schooner ERNESTINA is being supported in part by a Save America’s Treasures grant administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior; The Partnership Matching Funds Program of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation; and donations from the general public. The scope of work on the vessel is above the waterline from the bow to the break in the deck. Beyond this they have gone to great lengths to not only document the work being done but also to integrate the work into a long range plan for the preservation of the ship. During his presentation Harold (who has been working as an owner’s representative in the yard since June 2008) will show photos of the work being done as well as discuss the vessel’s preservation plan. www.burnhamboatbuilding.com (http://www.burnhamboatbuilding.com/)

The Council's mission is to develop quality technical practices and engineering standards for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of small craft with reference to their safety. www.abycinc.org (http://www.abycinc.org/)
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm: Frank Moore and Scott Dubrow, Mack Boring , Vessel Stabilization Vessel motions can be controlled by active systems to improve ride characteristics, safety, efficiency of crew, and passenger enjoyment. While static stability is a design/build responsibility, this seminar will discuss and compare different methods of reducing motion. It will cover the design, engineering, and construction of a variety of systems, looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each one. The presenters will focus on the newest gyro stabilizer technology and how it works to virtually eliminate roll, regarded by boaters as the most uncomfortable aspect of being on a boat. The speakers will be available to answer your questions regarding the gyro technology as well as stability systems in general. www.mackboring.com (http://www.mackboring.com/), www.seakeeper.com (http://www.seakeeper.com/)

This seminar addresses an overview of the sources of medical information, equipment, and resources available to the cruiser and ocean voyager. Denny Emory is co-founder of OceanMedix.com, a licensed yacht captain, and formerly certified Wilderness-EMT. He has voyaged more that 100,000 nautical miles on both sail and power vessels, visiting 42 countries on five continents. If anyone has the chance to attend the seminar given by DENNY EMORY I can attest to how interesting it is and while not today for me,one day i will be happy I did take it in .We are all at a different place along our own little time line!
He is actually giving 2 different ones .Doesn't matter ,as long as you can attend at least one of them .I have learned much from him [ over a scotch or 3 !! ] and he truly has"been there, done that,I got the t shirt....
The true reality of his presentation is that when I am truly in need of the knowledge he has, he will be on board my boat so I can kinda snooze through it all ..I will have the encyclopedia with me HA !
Seriously, his knowledge is very deep ,he really knows what he is talking about and anyone who MAY be off shore for a week or more really needs to attend.Hopefully you won't need his wisdom but I'd rather have and not need it than the other way around

I thought the displays were impressive. Everyone is really stepping up their game this year in order to grab attention... and there's the expense of showing to make it pay off, too. There were a couple of interesting seminars: corrosion surveys and protection, boatyard service department 'nightmares' (things that broke) and a history of Cape Dory Yachts. I had a nice lunch joshing back and forth with Liam English (WBFer) and Geoff Kerr. Clint and his gang were roaming the aisles while Bill R manned the booth. Good man.

Alec Brainerd's Herreshoff 15 was queen of the show IMO. Built in three months! Even Maynard Bray said that was comparable to what HMfgCo. would have done.

Sorrry, no pics.

Bad news, Em. Yesterday was too crowded for boat pics but I knew I'g be back to the show today as I had volunteered to help the Compass Project bring their display back to their shop after the Show. It wasn't so busy today so I pulled out my camera and as soon as I snapped the first pic I heard the dread beep, beep, beep that meant I had left the memory card in the card reader last night after the party. :(

I did manage some phone pics so at least I can post them.

That's all I got. I wanted to get a few shots of the boats outside but didn't manage it. Dan's Peggy Bliss was out there and a very nice British looking open boat. I never did get a chance to take a close look.

I didn't get any pics of Thad's beautiful little 1928 Starling Burgess tender, either.

If anyone else has pics it's time to share. :)

Mark is holding something I've never seen before, a solid jib car adjuster, Rbgarr explained how it works. It's nice to learn something.

At the Maine Boatbuilders show a couple of years ago I fell in love with a Chris-Craft 22' Sportsman that had been re-done. Three months later I found my own and realized what a great all around boat it was.

It is a lapstrake fiberglas hull with innerliner, foam floation and came with several engines, mine was a 220 hp Chris-Craft. If C-C would only build these again they would have a real winner.

I like those boats, too.
However, I think it's a Cutlass http://tinyurl.com/cgqg5b and not a Sportsman http://tinyurl.com/d5jkp4

Pacific Marine Mfg makes a replica of the Chris Craft (Dory) with a fiberglass hull.

Quote from wrap up on the MBBS from Phin Sprague:

I have to share that Nat Wilson (MBBS building #3 second floor) the eminently respected sail maker from East Boothbay has raised two exceptional sons and there had to be some sort of an historic moment set last year because they each had earned the post of "top mast men" in competing mega yachts Elinora and Altair. This is an astounding accomplishment and coincidence. At the Boat Show, Young Nat remembered the situation as an almost out of body experience where a hundred feet over the water and the same distance apart he could look over at his brother and hear him echo in his Maine accent the same commands Nat was giving down to the deck of the other boat.

This is a great U-Tube of the Classic Regatta it shows why we love it!

Another video to plug MBBS exhibitor Alison Langley (Bdg #3 2nd floor):

Thank you if you have worked your way down through these ramblings. If you have some thoughts that could help us improve next year's show, consider yourself on the board of advisors. I would also like to know where you stayed if you did and what your experience was in Portland?
