Well, it's been a looong winter, but I've finally gotten Sophie's boat finished and out of the garage and hope to stick her in the neighborhood pond this weekend for sea trials ;)
I decided to paint the hull with exterior housepaint(if it's good enough for Granna...) and the inside is varnished... she's gonna be in the water all summer and I look forward to seeing how well she holds up with all those polyeurethane-glued scarfs

Well I am in awe... Man! What a package that pram is. It begs several questions (remember this comes from an amatuer so bear with me):
Where did you get the plans?
Tell me the types of wood involved... Oak for the ribs perhaps and pine for the seats but what else? Consider ash for the ribs and/or seats? Did you reject ash for any reason? PLEASE don't tell me you rejected ash because it should not be used for boats.
My Arch Davis Sanddollar that I am building is repleat with ash - stringers, chines, seats, rub rails... I'm a gonner if... oh, why do I ask such questions... better to forge ahead in ignorance. Then when the Coast Guard finds me floating along in my PFD I can be truthful. Already I can hear their first question booming through the loudspeaker, "Ahoy there! You didn't make that wooden boat out of ASH did you?!!!" My meek reply, "I just didn't know..."
Another question: I have oar locks just like yours but all the ones I see elsewhere are shaped like a horseshoe. Any comment regarding pluses or minuses of each style?
Thanks for your help and congratulations again on a beauty.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the compliments. It's nice be able to say, "yeah, I made that." even if it is just a little dink.
Capn' The boat is Atlantic Cedar (called Juniper here) planking over oak ribs and the transoms are mahogany. I didn't consider Ash maninly because I try to stick to what is cheap and available and that is oak down here. I don't see why you cannot use Ash for this boat especially if it's cheap and available. I'd suggest keeping the boat light as possible by using pine/cedars for seats and floors etc.
The reason I used the round oarlocks is because I'll be taking the oars out of the boat when not in use and the round oarlocks stay with the oars in case I wanna row one of my other boats.
You guys have a good weekend.
