View Full Version : When safety gear... isn't

Safe that is.....

Last Wednesday I was over at a mate's place cutting up some old steel that he'd given me for the new shed. I was using his big angle grinder, so he gave me his clear faceshield.

It is one of those horrible old ones, where it isn't easy to adjust to different sizes, so I just crammed it on and got the job done - about 30 or so cuts through 1 1/4" steel posts.

The helmet scratched my forehead up a bit - nothing to think about really. Next day it was a bit sore and a bit red, but I was into the glassing of the hull on the Yellowtail. By Thursday night, I was regretting not going to the Doc. Swollen, nasty looking.

Friday there was nothing for it - off to the Doc and onto the Keflex. There's millions of little buggers been trying to drill a hole or two in my damn skull. They seem to have got part way in... left a bit of a dent there so far too. At least the pills are working.

Who'da thunk that a little scratch on the forehead could lead to all that pain, swelling and a hole in the head eh?

It reminds me of about 6 years back when we took a kids soccer team to the South Pacific Championships in Vanautu. One of the kids got a scratch on his nose and some flesh-eating bacteria got in and started galloping across his nose. Scary stuff.

What sort of bug was it Ian, and how did it get on the Helmet?

Has the bloke that owns the helmet got the bug or is he immune?

Mind you, could have added a bit of character.:D

Dunno what it was Rufus - he hasn't had any issues....

Character adding? Mate. No need.

btw - I've grown a full beard since then too.

Back in the 60s while working as an apprentice at the Toowoomba Foubdry, I nicked one of my fingers - just a little scratch. A few days later i was flat on my back in hospital with blood poisioning and on big doses of antibiotics.

Sure as hell hurts! The wife was sympathetic this morning. I showed her the forehead and her comment.... "that's ugly". Bazza's comment the other day - "you look like the elephant man"

Damn client just rang and asked me to a meeting in the city this afternoon too.....

Been there, scratched mosquito bites, seen the bugs. I've had my share of infected scrathces, nothing a little iodine couldn't handle, but my dad got a bad case of golden staphylococcus.

Reminds me that I should probably put together a first aid kit together when I start working on my boat. Living in a cold country makes you kind of complacent about those things.

It felt like something was crawling around in there for a while.

I spent 2 weeks in Vanuatu late last year, and then 4 days in hospital on IV antibiotics and 2 weeks off work in bed. A graze on my shin got kinda ugly.

I hope this gets better before it gets worse. These things have a knack for getting out of hand in a hurry.

Yeah - my concern too. The site of the biggest (deepest) hole is looking better but the top of my head is soooo damn painful to touch.... and the fluid is building up around the eyes.... Back to the doc methinks...
