I am not being lazy but having looked at several identification sites I just cant decide. Unvarnished it is quite a pinky brown. Any help appreciated.http://img3014.photobox.co.uk/874113669f7d2c97114a53ce0347867cd3352d619bcca704b9 2d76ff1f0472505b841259.jpg

Fortunately it worked. Hopefully someone will recognize it. Where did you get it?

Heavy? Hard? An end grain shot might be useful. It almost looks like Canyon Live Oak...

More info please.
Where in the world are you?
Where did the wood come from?
What is the density? Just weigh a piece and post the dimensions.
Images of end grain, edge grain, and flat grain would help.
Some sense of hardness?
Smell?
Stiffness?

Thanks for the responses. I will try and post some end grain tomorrow. I am in the UK and I have bought enough of this to replank my restoration project. It was very cheap and whilst described as Mahogany the chap selling it didnt actually know what it was. I was reassured that others had bought it from him for planking purposes. It seems quite dense and is quite hard to scratch the surface but in plank form seems to have quite a high level of flexibility. It does not have a particularly noticeable smell.

when i was at the boat school one of the local students brought in a sample of "iron wood" and the instructor said that it was a generic tropical wood, most likely used for trailer decking on big rigs or decking on wharfs, i remember the wood being almost plastic like in hardness and feel.

dunno what species it was though:rolleyes:

Thank you for your responses. Any one second Utile? I have bought myself R. Bruce Hoadley's 'Identifying Wood' but I don't seem to have found anything comparable. Here is a picture of some end grain, perhaps it will help. I have enough of this wood to replace all my rotten planks but I am reluctant to use it until I know what it is. Thanks again!http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/tt37/mattysg/005.jpg?t=1237653583

Hi

It resembles me a Brazilian hardwood known as "Angelim Pedra" or "Brazilian Apitong". If it isn't, it's very similar. More info at http://trailerdecking.com/ProductID2165

Looks like tight grained red oak to me but you'd know immediately by the smell. Maybe African Mahog. but the pink makes me wonder.
