I have built a 10'0" Rhodes Wherry. My oars are about finished and will soon need painting. Will varnish hold up as a finish for the oars or should I use paint? :confused:What would you recommend?:confused: I have read that the grips should not be painted to prevent blisters. It seems to me that they should have some kind of protection. What about teak oil on the grips? The oars are douglas fir.

Spar varnish is the traditional finish and works very well. Use 5 coats minimum. Grips should not be finished. Trust tradition and it won't let you down.

Varnish the oars and let natural oils of the skin on your hands be the only finish on the grips. That's my advice after nearly twenty years of rowing sail & oar boats.
