I'd heard that Jamie was coming down to Galveston to work on the three-masted barque Elissa, so it seemed like a good idea to take a day off from repairing my boat and going down and meeting the gentleman.
Good call on my part, it was time well spent.
Besides being a very talented rigger, he's an excellent teacher with an abundance of patience. After loaning me a marlinspike, he put me to work wrapping seizings on the deadeye lanyards, which was a double benefit: I was able to make a very small contribution to getting Elissa ready to sail again, and at the same time was learning the correct way of applying a seizing. I'm a slow learner, so Jamie had to show me some steps several times over. The heaver hitch he uses is really great for tightening up a line, and the crown and wall knots are a slick way to finish off the seizing.
Saturday evening Jamie gave a presentation on some of the work he'd done. I wanted to see it, but I needed to get home and get into some dry clothes. It only rained twice during the day, once inthe morning and once in the afternoon. I was sorry to miss Jamie's show, but I didn't need to come down sick.
Thanks, Jamie, it was a good day and I learned a lot from you.

Sounds like it was a good time. There are lots of worthy folks contributing to this forum and Jamie's one of 'em. I have two of his photo tutorials linked on my favorites list, both related to service and maintainence of wire rigging. They're truly excellent reference pieces. Thanks Jamie.

Sounds fascinating, and like a day well spent. I always enjoy it when people teach me things.

Thanks for the nice words Al and for all your help on the ELISSA last weekend. After Hurricane Ike last year, the rigging got slackened by the high winds and needed some tuning.

BTW Al your round seizings look great!!! Here is a quick tutorial on clapping on a round seizing http://www.flickr.com/photos/squarerigger/sets/72157603462274432/

Here are a couple of photos of all the fun:

The results of a good weekends work by some very dedicated volunteers. She is a beautiful barque and well worth a visit to Galveston.

Cool.
I had never thought of lashing some bar stock to the shroud before running a comealong to it to prevent kinks. I'll be sure to do that from now on. Thanks!
Great photos on your flikr site too.
