View Full Version : Securing Dagger Board Trunk to Hull
What product should be used to adhere the Dagger Board Trunk to the hull. Small day sailer, not sure if I should use gasket material, Sikaflex, or 3M 5200. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Epoxy is tried and true. Hard to argue with success.

Depends on what it all is made of and how...and what the plans call for.
And remember it'll all need to be dismantled some day for repair, eh?
Some are glued and screwed and some are bedded and screwed. Some are glued at the posts and bedded at the logs. Most call for cotton at the post rabbet.

This solid trunk will be painted first, bedded in Vulkem 116 Poly Sealant, and screwed on 3" centers with 2 1/2" #14 bronze...the sealant similar to 5200....and the posts shown in red lead rabbeted, bedded and caulked with cotton at the end rabbet.
5200 and the like are adhesive, but when used atop enamel paint work more like a traditional (but tougher and longer-lasting) bedding as the adhesion is only to the paint.

On my Shellback Dinghy the centerboard case is glued in with 3M 5200. It's easily removed by unscrewing the center thwart which braces it, then dealing with the 3M 5200 joint. Also the inside is very narrow. The plans specifically mentioned using 3M 5200.
On my Elver the centerboard trunk is much longer, wide enough to stick my hand in for sanding and painting, and part of the structure of the boat. It's secured with epoxy + lag bolts. It's not intended to ever be removed. The designer said to build it this way.
Hope this helps in your decision,
Will.
I am concerned about using epoxy, because I imagine at some point it would need repair/replacement, and how do you get it apart. The Centerboard trunk is small, .5 X 23". I will be running bolts up through the bottom of the boat. If I understand the earlier post, I should paint the interior of the boat before installing the CB trunk.

I simply used a gasket of xynole fabric saturated with thick oil-based alkyd enamel to bed the daggerboard trunk into my Chamberlain Gunning Dory. I made sure that the bedlogs matched the contour of the bottom plank as closely as possible and I hanked it down with permanant bronze 1/4-20 carriage bolts run through the bedlogs from the bottom exterior. It has never leaked a drop despite catching the daggerboard on a submerged ledge at hull speed. A VERY quick stop!! but nobody saw...ehem, and that rather large 'dutchman' in the leading edge of the daggerboard is simply a decorative touch...yeah, thats it 'marquetry' I think it's called...yeah...
Bob, what ya building?
