Let's get our terminology straight.

'smoot' is a unit of measure, being the height (about 5'7") of an MIT undergraduate, Oliver R. Smoot (class of 1962). Smoot gained immortality when his fraternity brothers used him to measure the Massachusetts Avenue bridge which links Cambridge and Boston. The measured length of the bridge was 364.4 smoots +- one ear.

Having personally become a standard of measure, Smoot's career was ordained. He later became chairman of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and president of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

In Google Earth, the 'Ruler' tool shows distances in feet, meters, miles, and even smoots.

So does that mean if peak-to-trough wave height is about 5'-7" those are Smoot seas?

:p

thanks guys, it was quite an adventure building it, i used a lot of local resources most of the wood is local and i purchased everything within the state. I started it at the boat school (a practice i think they dont allow anymore) and put the deck on and finished it in my boss's shop.

Now that i have completed one project i am itching for another and i was looking at the Handy Andy, Atkins design http://www.boat-links.com/Atkinco/Dinks/HandyAndy.html (http://www.boat-links.com/Atkinco/Dinks/HandyAndy.html)

I think i like the design enough to give it a whirl, it seams to be a strip built canvas cover dingy, which i am taking a liking to, and i wanted to build a boat that can be sailed (i have never sailed before though) but i did go on a historic tall ship the Madeline, so i did sail but i dont think it counts. does anyone have any experience with the Handy Andy, he/she seems to be a smooth sailor and looks to be a gorgeous little boat:)

You don't have to wait for the water to smoot out if you sail a Tech Dinghy.
