So most of you know that I'm moving to Detroit at the end of the month.:) Just curious... what are some of the classic wooden sailboats that were designed or built for use primarily on the Great Lakes? No size limits, just kinda cruiser or cruiser/racer oriented... schooner designs would be a plus;).

http://C:\Documents and Settings\tprice\My Documents\My Pictures\lake-one-lines.jpgI don't think there is a fleet or even very many left on the Lakes but one of my favorite designs is the Phil Rhodes drawn "Lake One Design". Think of a "cruising IOD". If I was ever going to build my own boat for limited cruising, daysailing and the occasional race, it would be a Lake.
It's nothing like a schooner though!

Look up Collingwood Skiffs, Mackinaw boats, Ohio Pound Net boats, Great lakes scow schooners, just for a start. More later!

Schooner "Ranger" was built for the Pres of Coca Cola. She was built in Manitowoc, Wisc and sailed the Great Lakes in her early years. Here's a couple of shots of her during her life in So. Cal.

Didn't I see FAME listed for sale a little while ago? I think she's in Chicago though?

Edited to add - yep! http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/boa/1024681756.html and only $16K! B.B. Crowninshield's own boat - problem solved! Buy it Paul. You'll make Wild Dingo very jealous!there's another thread on Fame in MBR. I called and talked to the owner about her. She's pretty bad off, essentially you'd be building a completely new boat amd moving a few pieces of original hadware over to the new boat. And, this was already done once back in the 1940's...

No size limit and schooner imply you'll go pretty big if the mood strikes, but you don't really say what kind of cruising you have in mind. The Rhodes Lake One Design that tprice mooted is a nice choice.

Here is a much smaller Rhodes design that's also well regarded - http://www.ladyben.com/SearchResultsFull.asp?VesselID=2481

Here are three larger (comparable to the LOD) that popped up when I was doing a little unrelated poking around on yachtworld.com. They're all in Europe - but you have to honeymoon somewhere. :) They're all relatively inexpensive and quite pretty. If the boats are in good condition, and I imagine shipping is reasonable, one might suit.

No funny trees coming out of the deck, but my cruiser is a Chicago design. Designed in 1937 by AM Deering.
