View Full Version : unusual plane and shave
Has anyone ever seen either of these tools anywhere else? They are supposed to be original designs of the maker. Original or not though. these are some really fine, fine little tools. The plane is a convex compass plane and the other is just a small spokeshave and they both are razor sharp and the mouths are so small and tight the shavings come out more like a peice of fabric they are so incredibly thin they will just bend and wrinkle up in your hand. I like them alot. They are made by a fellow in Ca. zentoolworks

What beautiful tools!
Makes ya want to pick em up and use them
So I'll change my last statement in the original post to "They are being SOLD by Zentoolworks" and I'll be damned if they are not cheaper at LV. I did not see the ebony compass plane though. Maybe he actually makes that one. If anyone finds a pic of that one on the net let me know please. Regardless, the little things are quite nice.

I emailed LeeValley today. They tell me that they are currently made in China.
They won't tell me who makes them though. Perhaps someone named Wong.

The plane I would call a 'cocktail' plane. I have one made by my granfer, but it's 'back to front' compared with the one posted, i.e. iron is set at the opposite angle. Great little tools for hollowing. I've used mine for making swept (spoon) oars and finishing the inside of model yachts carved out of the solid.
I'll dig it out and post a pic later.
China or no, it's a nice little too and it's friggin sharp, both of them. I did not see a plane like the little convex compass plane maybe he has a design of his own. I already busted him out on the spokeshave. It's not that I care if he actually made them or not, it's just that he grossly misrepresented the tools by claiming that they were his designs.

The works of the plane look suspiciously like the works of these (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=50232&cat=1,41182). Also Chinese, very nicely made little planes -- I use both in instrument building.
