I just got a set of plans for Joansa, a ply lap stitch boat about 16 feet long. The instructions are somewhat sparse and, being written by a New Zealander, difficult to understand. Has anyone built one of these or have any general advice. This is my first attempt at building a boat of this kind - I have built a couple of strip kayaks.
Thanks,
Roy.

Welcome Roy, I'm not familiar with the Joansa, but stitch & glue is pretty straight forward. Anything in particular giving you problems?

Most everything! It's difficult in places to figure out exactly what the instructions say and sometimes even what the scantlings are. I haven't started yet and expect that most things will become clear as I work at them. Thanks for the respons though. Once I do get started I'll post again if I run into specific problems. You can see a pic of the finished boat on the Duckworks magazine site.

Yes, I saw the picture. Nice looking boat. You might try contacting the designer and ask if he can recommend a book that will give you some ideas on construction techniques. Keep us posted.

I'll interpret for you if you like Roy.
What is it you're having trouble with?
Joansa... what's that? Wellsford? Hartley?

Thats a Welsford.
He is setting up a new site and is hard to contact at the moment. Search by "John Welsford" and the design name. Also check the attached site.

Sure out to be able to offer something constructive between us John. Just had a look in John Welsfords book "Backyard Boatbuilder". Not a lot on the Joansa beond line drawings. However it dose have good info on how JW does his constructions.
I could scan a few relivent pages if you like

Many thanks to all for the tremendous response. Because of family commitments I will probably not start construction until early August. When I get going I,m sure I shall be back asking for help. Thanks again - I'll keep you posted.
Roy.
