I'm building a Shellback Dingy and I'm up to the point of building a stem and frame. The instructions call for laminating strips of 1/8th inch fir veneer. I caqn't find that anywhere. Any help locating this would be greatly appreciated. What everyone wants to sell me is 1/8th inch okoume plywood. Would that work OK?

There is a place in Virginia Beach that sells premium vertical sawn fir to door manufacturers. They are over in the general area of Virginia Beach Blvd and 158 in the Industrial Park. Look up in the yellow pages for door and materials. As far as I know they are still in business. You will have to run it in strips. If you have a drum sander, or a good cabinet shop is around you, get them to true it up with it.

If you choose not to track this down, go to Yukon Lumber in downtown Norfolk and buy some Honduras Mahogany. They also have a shop and will run you whatever you wish as long as you can afford it. smile.gif

Saw your own. Eighth inch seems a bit thinner than necessary depending on the radius of the curve you have to make. The thinner the strips the less spring back you'll get however.

One of my favourite places for wood is A & M Wood (http://www.amwoodinc.com/). They're in Canada but they'll ship to the U. S. A.

If you have access to a bandsaw just resaw what you need from a fir plank. It'll be considerably cheaper and if you're careful and use a really sharp blade you'll need to do little or no smoothing of the veneers before you laminate them.

Any clear lumber will do, if you keep the pieces in order you will not need to sand.

Randy,

I'm building a Shellback, as well. I didn't use 1/8" veneer, I cut mine 1/4", and it worked fine, if a bit harder to clamp to the jig. Less waste, too.
