Sure enough after 8 months of static and another 3 of no service at all, my phone rang today for the first time in nearly a year. Who was it?

Ed Harrow.

What a treat to catch up!

I've been teaching and coaching drama for young folks here in the islands for the last year and a bit. Around that I have been coordinating systems upgrades for a few of the scholastic performance spaces here.

I've carried on with my volunteer support work, mostly marine, with the National Park Service. In fact when Ed called I had just walked in the door from a morning spent chasing down and diving on a wayward ocean buoy (on 2 hours sleep, even).

Hurricane Omar blew through here last year and knocked us for another loop. My boats are fine, despite an eyewall tornado vortex which passed along our place.

There's the twister path coming up to our place. Ordinarily that bush is impenetrable, and you could see perhaps 20 feet ahead Staring at it, the perception is that a buldozer went for a joyride down (or in this case up) the hill. It snapped off our pole...

And set our construction on an addition back a fair way...

And, as I mentioned to Ed, inexplicably it unscrewed each of our outside lightbulbs, but mercifully left the fixtures intact...

Boats along shore, both in town and out east by us, fared less well. Christiansted was hit hard, and there was little warning as Omar intensified quickly and moved fast...

(There were 4 boats in that pile-up.)

The Yacht Club on the East End was hit hard as well...

...although most boats remained afloat. There were an unusually high number of boats which remained afloat, though nearly all were dismasted.

Power was out for about 3 weeks for us, although we've got that lifestyle down to a science. A few of our appliances, older mostly, packed it in over the next few months, but that's to be expected.

So that's it from here. It's still warm, happily.

My condolences to all over the loss of both Ken and Dave. I hope the rest of you are well and thriving. I'll look in more this weekend to catch up.

Happy New Year!

Rick

That's a lot of news for us to comprehend and puts things in perspective for us all.

Best of luck with every little thing.
