View Full Version : I can't believe this guy is going to cut this boat up for fire wood
Hi All, just ran across this in the local CL. I have no association with him, I just think he is nuts.

An A. R. True Rocket?
Here's another one:

Sure do look like a rocket. I've never seen one up close, but it seems a shame to make firewood out of it.....although it may be total junk. I live close to him but my wife would kill me if I dragged it home.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably isn't true.

Haha, good on yer Bob :D
Or there is the other side, "What's one mans junk, is another mans treasure" :P

I doubt that the boot was mispainted. Looks like a pad-induced ripple that really destroys the boat. Time for demolition.

Look at it this way. Destroying that boat makes her sisters more valuable. I will confess though burning mahogany just seems wrong.
Hi Ian, If you look carefully, to my eye, it looks like a ripple in the picture. Not sure though.
For all I can see there is no keel in this boat, or very little. Wonder how it keeps from being pushed sideways.

Nar, if that were the case the sheer would have a kink in too, to me the sheer looks ok in the pic.
I think Ian's got the winning ticket so far.

I vote that the photo was moved just a touch when it was scanned. That's why there's a ripple. If you look down below the hull, you see the ripple carries into the surrounding grass.
And when people say they'll turn an old boat into firewood, it says more about the person than the boat.

Looks to me like the ground under neath the "kink" is kind of distorted also.
Maybe, just a single tear fell on the photograph, before his wife forced him to scan it.
So, the question is: even though I have a large project going, is this boat worth the effort? I would have to store it under tarp for a couple years. Does anyone know about these boat?

Do you want to fix them, or do you want to sail them? Is it really possible to have both?
So many questions ...
It would be nice to find a good home for the boat, though.

I think we have all asked ourselves that question djn :D
Is it worth the effort?
First you need to be honest to yourself and decide IF you need another project, then if it's yeah I could IF the right one came along, then you need to take a closer look at it before you can make a final judgement.

What's the latest on the stem repair on the other boat?

Or, could I pick it up for 2 and sell it for 5?
Assuming the bump in the boot is a photographic aberation of some sort.

It's an AR True Rocket, just like Ponder here, which looked worse off than this guy's when I got it. I have the spec sheet that DJN posted and if you look close you'll see a centerboard there. It's a 1/2" steel plate 2' x 4'. This is a great boat, easy to singlehand, sturdily built, totally repairable, and fun to sail. I can nose mine right onto a beach. I got Ponder for free out on Martha's Vineyard and got it home and started out full tilt, but then the divorce happened and the project stalled. After two years of neglecting the boat I donated it to a community group, then led volunteers on the restoration. This was our 2nd Summer sailing it and the whole experience has been great! Having said that....A wise friend once told me that a free sailboat isn't free unless it comes with a good suit of sails and all it's hardware. Getting the trailer would be a big bonus....
You can't sell a boat for $200. If you want $200 for your boat, list it for$1500 and allow the buyer to beat you down to $500.;)
Hi Tom, unfortunatly, due to a rough year, the other boat is under tarp awaiting funds. Things have picked up though and I expect it to be done by spring. Cheers.

Sounds like a real jerk! What kind of idiot would do THAT to a fine boat?? Reminds me of an old Roald Dahl story about an antique collector chasing a Chippendale tall-boy!

Sounds like the Save Toby (http://www.savetoby.com/) site, where the premise was "Send us some money or the bunny gets it."

I've been trying to remember who wrote that!
The dealer talked the "rube" down in price by saying he'd pay what the wood was worth. When he went back to get it the next day, the priceless piece had been knocked apart and stacked as a pile of wood, by the tobacco spittin seller. Great tale - thanks for reminding me.

Chippendale as in male stripper?? Doesn't sound like Roald Dahl's subject matter. ;)

I have been the reluctant "savior" of too many of these "surplus" hulls. We all bemoan the end to some of these great hulls but we can't take 'em all. Too bad but there is only so much time and too many that seem to follow us home only to languish in a more forlorn posture as the time goes by. Maybe some of us will get laid off and have the extra time for something like this but, then, we won't have the price of the material. Ahh the conundrum.
Hi Steve, that is the reason I passed on this boat. I have a good boat now that needs my attention and having another project will just be a burden hanging over my head. Cheers.
