And its mental help, im frustrated. I lofted the panels for my Garvey and they look good, then i picked off the panels and built the Molds/frames, they look good, ive set them up on the Ladder frame as the plans call for [upsidedown build] and i just happened to measure the side panels flat on the lofting at each station and if i were to cut the panels out and try to put them on the molds they would all be to small height/width wise by an inch or as much as three inches depending on the angle of the hull. Closer to the stern where the bottom is almost flat and the sides are not angled much is not that different, but up forward where the angles are greater is where the real difference is. For instance , at station three, if i were to measure horizontal from the keel to the chine, level, the panel would be the right width, but because the hull has a vee/ angle there the distance is greater and the panel if cut as lofted would come up short. What am i missing? Arent the panels supposed to fit when cut from the lofting?

Let me see if I understand correctly. Did you cut the side panels using the heights taken directly off the profile? If so, they will be too narrow due to the changing angle of the sides. To get the actual widths of the side panels, you must measure from the sections drawn on the body plan. These sections show the actual height at each station and the angle of the sides.

I hope this answers your question, if not, try again.

No, the panels will not fit if cut from the profile loft. The lofted heights of the panels are not the same dimension as the actual widths of the panels at the stations. This is because the heights are a vertical measurement, but the actual widths lie at an angle. The angle is the flare angle or deadrise angle at each station.

So how do you get the actual panel shape? This requires making a pattern for the panel, then transferring the pattern to your panel stock. It's a good idea to leave an extra 1/2-inch or so when cutting the panel, doing a trial fit, and then trimming as needed.

Is this one of the Ben Garveys you're building?

Thanks Jim , i understand what you are saying , but i thought you used the profile panel as it is. So do you know of a website or literature that explains how to loft the panels from the Bodyplan?

Thank you for the help TerryLL, i thought i was going to have to tear up my molds and start over and was very frustrated. Yes it is the 15'9' Ben Garvey, Doug Hylan design.

There are computer programs that can take a plan and develop patterns for the panels. Doug may actually have patterns available, so a phone call to him can't hurt. Making a pattern is pretty simple, but it sure helps having someone help you through it the first time. Try a search for "spiling" on the WB Magazine index. Lots of articles.

Where in the world are you anyway? There might be help at hand if we knew.
