What's the deal with being banned?

How does it work? What notification appears where, or can you simply not log on and an error message shows up: "Unauthorized user" or something similar?

On another thread, Tylerdurden seems to have told someone he's 'banned' until August. How does he know it's for that long... and does Scot really use that word? How quaint!

I think the August comment was an exageration. Typical is 30 days but for the hardened repeat offender...

On another forum I frequent people are labled as "Village Irritant" as a sort of
probation before banning. Gives new users a heads up that this person is perhaps best ignored.

Ah, understood. I can't see why then, if warned, someone who didn't care to be banned would be.

Not such a badge of disfavor in that case, since it's self-inflicted.

I've posted a favorite photo of a nude, waterborne Betty Page but it was removed by the powers that be. No harm, no foul... no warning either. No problem.

I can assure you right now that if I posted a picture of myself in the nude, I'd be banned for life..no warning...just..well blackballed from the entire internet.

Clearly, some conduct is so bad that a warning is not given. But then we all know what that type of behavior is.
