hello to all...it's been ages since we last posted. we are very nearly finished and only months away from launching.

busy boat shed scene!

Stern carving. Scrollwork and boat name painted with gold paint and Home Port in black.

Main and fore boom bails. Cast in gunmetal bronze.

Myth levers for running backstays. Cast also in gunmetal bronze. The yoke slides within the main arm. Very quick and positive solution to 'letting off' and 'putting on' the backstays.

Some of our plans have changed post launch: we now find ourselves preparing for a mooring base in Trinity Inlet (Cairns) while we go back to (paid!!! :D ) work for awhile. The local marina charges $900 per month for a 15m slip...way too much. So we will be dropping a bouy mooring in. We will have two 1.2tonne concrete blocks on the bottom.

A beaut little boat in the making. The Acorn 7' 5" tender (named Dominica).

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid102/p92a55a9abfadb7153008a02a03ca552e/f9bad4cf.jpg
Built solid for sea survival - liferaft like. (..our motto is...it ain't a boat, until its afloat!) Watertight compartments fore and aft. Floor boards are out as dinghy is coated with Evidure (preservative). It's a small boat but with a lot of internal volume.

Hope you enjoy these...Bernadette.

For such works of art your local marina ought to pay you to keep her at their prime dock space and then charge admission.

Tremendous!

So, you carved the letters into the transom? I remember corresponding with you several years ago about it, when the job was ages away in the future. Looks great.

It all looks great. Can't wait to see her afloat.

So big and so pretty! Good job on the tender too smile.gif

I haven't heard those things called "myth levers" before. Where does the name come from?

John B

They're a J Laurent Giles design so I'd assume they were first used on Myth of Malham.( sp?).
They often get called Highfield levers ,something I'm sure Mr( or was he a Vicar) Highfield is pleased about. Anyway, that seems to be the generic term for them.
Bernadette, I set mine up so you don't have to cast them off for the run. It's just in the way you rig them if you're interested. works like a charm.

John, you are correct about the origin of the Myth levers. It was Illingworth who (had it?) designed for his then yacht, "Myth of Malham". On "Pequot" we didn't have to "cast them off" as you say. However, on the schooner we find that this time around we will have to detach the lower from the upper and run it forward. No big deal really...ain't in a hurry!!!!! tongue.gif In any case, we wouldn't mind a photo of your set up (if you have one)...just for a look see anyhow!

Absolutely excellent work. Now that you've got the hang of the dinghy making - would you mind doing another for me? :D

I must admit, I miss the business trips I used to get to Cairns and up and down the coast when I was doing some marine tourism work for GBRMPA and others.

I'm not going to agree with you on that point Bernadette. My experience is that when you want your backstay on you want it on ,and having to go forward to get it is , well, time consuming with all that that implies. It's probably more critical in my rig than yours but still... as you say, it's worth looking at. I'll look for a photo of what I ended up with after a bit of experimentation.1 action , you get enough slack to go onto a full run without detaching the runner. basically its just in the purchases on the deck. you can either double or triple the amount of slack you get from the lever.
