Midlothian? (Anyone heard of it??)
Yes, thank you. Midlothian, Scotland that is. I drive through it regularly.
Sometimes I think the only place names in the British Isles that haven't been filched by those damned kleptomaniac Yanks are Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Helions Bumpstead.
Oh, and that place in Wales with the v-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-ry long name, maybe. :)

What the heck are you doing in Midlothian?
Didn't your daddy ever tell you to stay away from Midlothian, Texas?
I guess not.:)
I'm not far away to the southwest. Look on a map at Highway 67 from Midlothian to Alvarado to Cleburne to Glen Rose. I'm a few miles from Glen Rose.
Send me a PM or email and I'll meet you for lunch or dinner, or if you have time off we can paddle kayaks at lake Cleburne or Lake Granbury or Lake Benbrook.
I'd be pleased to meet you.
There are a couple other members around Dallas who may contact you.
Cheers!

Midlothian is a turd hole! Nothing there but a big cement plant that apparently the cause of 90% of the global warming myth. Did you lose a bet or are you doing community service for a horrible crime!?!?! I am from Oak Cliff (South Dallas) not much better, but at least its not Midlothian!!!

It's where my home office is located. Owner and the marketing guy are somewhere in an arabian desert working on more business, so I came to help out.
Just got here, so I don't know yet what my schedule will be like but your suggestion sounds like a blast! I'll let you know if I can.
I saw Glen Rose on the map. Whatzat, 'bout 45 minute drive?

LOL! Midlothian isn't so bad (in my limited experience). :) In fact, I think it's kinda great since a Midlothian company hired me two weeks after my USeLess Airways layoff!

What's it near?
You've never been to Texas, have you? Nothing there is near anything else. If it was, it wouldn't admit to it. San Antone's pretty. Austin is cool. Big Bend is worth a trip. Nice architecture on the island. The East Texas piney woods have their attractions. The rest is pretty much a write-off. Of course, you have to keep in mind that this is coming from a fella who grew up on the Oregon coast. I figure if there aren't ferns growing thick, and moss dripping everywhere, something must be wrong :p

I remember Midlothian from my environmental work in the 80's. The cement plant there was held up to our local governments as an example of a how either hazardous waste or tires could be safely burned. I forget which,,,
We fought Phoenix Cement in Clarkdale, Az on both fuel sources and won twice Phoenix Cement is still profitably operating using low sulpher coal from Colorado. Any halogens introduced come out as dioxins and furans.
You'd be safer to not breathe while you're there!

Kevin, I missed your post earlier. Midlothian is 'bout half hour drive south of DFW.

Nope, Chuck, Midland is a good 300 miles east (I man West)of here.
However, Dallas is very near Midlothian and has the world's largest concentration of mega religious stadiums, er, churches.
You can smell the brimstone and hear the thumping!

If you have to move here, tell Cheryl not to worry.
You can look around and find a place like I have out on the prarie near a big lake and fine people. Texas is much maligned beyond its just due.
But Midlothian sucks by All standards.
You can work there and commute a few miles!

There's also Caddo Lake and Terlingua!
Austin is my favorite town in Texas, bar none!
My favorite place in Texas is Indian Mountain Ranch, where I live.
I searched for peace of mind and quiet for 50 years, and I finally found it, but I had to build it with my own two hands.

Glen,
You're right, of course. Texas is much maligned... and for very good reasons. But there are some certainly some good things about it. There's, um... well, the...errrr... HEY, don't rush me. I'm thinkin' here.
Well, as much as it didn't suit me, there are some real fine folks from Texas: Chuck Leinweber (of Duckworks Magazine fame); Ann Richards: Kinky Friedman; Henry Gonzalez; Jim Hightower; LBJ. And just think of all the marvelous musicians. I've never experienced so much musical magic anywere as I did in Austin during the two years I lived there. And swimming in the cool, fresh waters of Barton Springs -- nothing finer.
And, of course, there are the absolutely wonderful summers. Gorgeous weather. Too bad they only last from mid-December to mid-February (in a good year)

Ah, the musicians.
If somebody told me I had to go out and find 100 excellent guitar players before sunup tomorrow morning or get nutted, I believe I could do it.
I'd take three or four with me and leave immediately for Dallas-Fort Worth, and I'd have 30-40 by midnight, then I'd head for Austin.
By sunup I'd have a hundred and few left over.

MidLothian is where I stayed when I worked on the X-35 for Lockheed. I drove in early and left early to try to avoid the DFW traffic....I sorta compared it with Jal, New Mexico where my aunt lived....t'weren't much there but sand and rattlesnakes, Jal was nicer, it was less populated....maybe 300 people.
Glen Longino

Would that have been in the mid sixties, Chuck?

My aunt and uncle lived there in the late 40's thru the 60's and well into the 70's.....when I would visit cuzzin David his mom would walk the front porch and yard to the gate with a little double barrel .410 shotgun pistol and clean out the rattlers....we crawled all through Carlsbad and found places conquistadores had visited and no one else had been into since.

Don't get much better than that for snakes!
Did you ever get into Comanche reservation country around Cache, OK?
Lifelong friends of mine there brought me along the path of barbarian spiritualty with their water drums and Herbs for 50 years.
Dangit, I've lost my treasured mentors and buried them out there one by one. Know what I mean? Makes a hard man want to cry!
If you move back to OK, I'll come see you, but Md is too damn far!:)
Best to you!

Now back to more important things.....is the friend paired up? Can she swim? SCUBA? Know how to sail? Wanna live on a boat in Annapolis?
Does she understand snowbirding? So many wimmins so little time.

Tar Devil,
Welcome to North Texas! I am on Eagle Mountain Lake, about 50 miles northwest of Midlothian. I think you will find that Texas, just like every other place in the world, has it's plusses and minuses. As far as the weather goes, the Texas summer is no worse than the winter in Yankee-land. Consider how nice it has been in recent months. I promise you that the people here are as friendly and hospitable as anywhere in the world.
My neighbor retired fom Indiana 2 years ago and absolutely loves being here. They are trying to get all their retiree friends to move down.
One one of my good friends here on the lake is a pilot for the "Phoenix Morons". I suspect both sides share a common disdain for the other. He recently was changed to eastern routes and was in NYC when the "Miracle on the Hudson" happened.
Let me know if I can assist your transition in any way.
