Evinrude (BRP) is coming out with new 25 and 30 hp versions of its ETEC outboard. Seems pretty impressive on a weight to hp or size to hp basis; however, what are these engines like on a quietness basis? How do they compare in sound levels to a similar sized four-cycle engine? Also, how do they troll; do they run smoothly for extended periods at 4-6 mph speeds? I have absolutely no experience with the ETEC and would appreciate any comments from those who do.

Have you been here?

They have multiple forums covering various components of outboard use like maintainence, repair, propping, opinions etc.

I had a booth at a show a couple of years ago and the e-tec dealer had one in a barrel about 20' from where I normally stood. I never could tell if it was running from the sound. Think it was a 75hp? Quiet as any 4 stroke I know of.

cleanest running 2-stroker designed today.. Less exhaust emission than 4-stroke..
I am waiting for all the bugs worked out before I ever invest in one..

The Aquasport work boat where I work has a 90 hp E-Tec. Before I started there it gave them a lot of trouble (they bought it new), to the point that Bombardier replaced the entire power head. I never had any trouble with it this past summer, but the yard manager has it in for the brand now.

My neighbor has a 115 and absolutely loves it, which is good because I kind of recommended it hoping in part to see how the local service reps work out (!!). He was tired of paying yard bills for storage and winterizing/commissioning so he also got a trailer and cover. The auto-winterize functionality and low maintenance is what sold him on it IMO. I watch over the boat in his driveway where my boat stays for the winter too. "You scratch my back...."

The 115 replaced the Yamaha 150 on a Grady White 19 and the acceleration and top speed is markedly better, such that it scares his wife. She does have a bad back so it's not altogether a misplaced anxiety.

That's good news about the smaller horsepower models. I've got a Honda 30 that's getting long in the tooth....

E tec had some birthing pains, but it's my understanding they have it right now.

The only problem a friend of mine has had with his ETEC 90 is trying to restart it when it's already running. I know of an awful lot of these in the Boston Whaler community. The above problem is the very first I had heard. Really impressive in my opinion.

This is the third year that we have been told that the under 45hp engines would be available. No one here has actually seen a 25 or 30. Cost to produce them is reasonable in the 45 and up range. Been a real problem getting the cost down on the lower HP versions. One solution was Chinese production. Was in the local dealership Wednesday and that ws the word from the factory rep.

I saw at least an ETEC 40HP yesterday at the boatshow. I'll look closer when I'm back there on Saturday.
