Arne Naess died Monday at age 96.

Most known for inventing the term “deep ecology”, Naess was the youngest appointed professor of philosophy in Oslo, with technical work in Spinoza, Buddhism and philosophy of science.

His early positivism evolved with his growing eco-consciousness into what is now understood as a sort of naturalistic pluralism.

Naess was also a brilliant mountaineer.
