is what I think I'd build for a permanent live-aboard these days.
http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp154/paladinsfo1/littleisland30.gif

Powered by a 90 hp Beta marine diesel with hydraulic tranny, dry stack exhaust, large water heater, long range tanks. Push it to 12 1/2 foot beam, strip planked construction, about 3-3.5 foot draft, raise the hold area a bit and extend it all the way back to the wheelhouse......

Looks good, especially for our location.

Where would the extra 7-8 feet show up, Chuck?

I like it a lot!

Might it be a quicker build in hard-chine ply (Devlin) construction?

Any interior layout pics of those to show us, Jim?

Check out Devlin's Oysta series for variations on the same theme. I like the fantail sterns on these for sure!

Here's one:

I agree, Andrew, but I think it has (had) more to do with the Fisher underbody design...

ACB and Chuck, I've always liked the idea and look of the Fisher motorsailers but don't know much about them. What's the design problem?

A quick glance at the photos leads me to believe that the hull of "Gwylan" is too slack bilged.
Hence the need for the bilge keels.

A Cat version - met one in a marina in Essex - odd looking thing.

Some people think that there are sometimes advantages to bilge keels, and that they are something that should be considered as one of several anti-roll schemes, rather than being rejected automatically.

I came to link to Kasten's Greatheart 36 (http://www.kastenmarine.com/greatheart36.htm), even though she's aluminum and I don't see a design note that her plans are available for ply/composite. There's a mast sketched on one of the gifs that could be for a junk rig motor sailor.

Roll Attenuation (http://www.kastenmarine.com/roll_attenuation.htm) is one of a number of interesting papers on the site.

Nanoose, I think right in the middle of the boat.....
The house is a good place for the galley/dinette...I would narrow the head area for a single potty for use when underweigh offshore.....then the living area below with a generous "living room" with the sleeping are forward a bit oversized, about queen sized, then you would have room for a small combination working desk are and just enough room for a nice head below with a small sink and coffee machine/small frig below and a fireplace of some sort....and a desk for an office/design area/computer/research setup....

I have an itchy pencil.....I'll do a set of lines and then doodle the rest and punch a few numbers. I'll never be able to build the boat and the only way it would work is to have someone else build it...I'm good for 3-4 hours a day at very low exertion levels....painting, varnishing etc. I had a 3 hour conversation with some folks today and got the lowdown on a portable dialysis unit if I need it....trying to stay away from that and they use me as a guinea pig with some new drugs...they make me tired and so a couple hours nap and I'm good for a another 3-4 hours.....my entire desire would be snowbirding....where it's warm. I can't stand the cold anymore....it's excrutiating pain...

Actually Chuck I believe Karl all ready has a larger version of that design, I remember there being a larger one as well on his site.

I'll take one.
Sometimes I really miss living aboard. :(

Mike, he has a couple of larger designs that are similar, but not exactly...his 36 would be close with a few changes, but over the last 3-4 weeks I have sent 4 e-mails to his site and got zilch in return.....so I'll use his design as a thought and crunch my own numbers.

Bill Page, one of the most experienced yacht brokers, sailors, and cruisers on the coast here has adapted this design for himself, IIRC based on one of William Garden's. The hull was built by French and Webb and he has or is finishing it off himself.

At last I can add something meaningful to one of Jim's posts.

Ahem!!! <drum roll> "Gwylan" means "Seagull".

Ugly boats btw, but they seem to be loved. Lots of people build ladders and have all kinds of shippy things above the C of G.

You just feel compelled to say that because I like them. Admit it, you'd say Rosinante was ugly if I said I like it.

Not true, I love your dinghies and kayak. It's the stubby top hamper babies I don't like. So for once I like the execution but not the desire.

Just had a quick look at the chesepeake designs. The redwing 40 is a very nice design.

I guess its about time I posted my latest idea for a stubby top hamper baby (whateverthehellthatmeans:cool:). I just know you're gonna love it...

I'm still the same old humble unaffected JimD. Now be a good lad and fetch my pipe and slippers.

Can you make a dry stack exhaust quiet enough without robbing too much power from a relatively small engine?

I never received any response to several e-mails and a couple of phone calls so gave up on that project. I was willing to pay for the work but couldn't get a peep......so......

That's sorta what I was thinking....but the idea was to let someone like Raoul build it for me....
