The 19ft Cutter I plan to build has a pretty much standard build up of keel, stem, sternpost and Knees all bolted together. What should I glue/seal this lot together with? The construction is Oak with Larch planking. All components should be liberally coated in preservative and/or red lead paint /aluminium primer?

Guys sorry! I know this is basic stuff and must have been discussed many times before, I have tried to use the search function and done a lot of reading about polyurethane and oil based stuff with and without preservatives (nowadays) but am only confusing myself more. This is my first venture into the world of traditional building having done a number of cold moulded epoxy boats in the past.

There are lots of things you could do. There are folks who will surely come forward with suggestions. On the major components of structure and deadwood, we put lots of boat sauce (turp, Stockholm tar, linseed oil mix) to ensure the wood wouldn't go drying out too fast and suck the life out of the sealant. Then we put on large quantities of Dofinite (or is it spelled Dolphinite?) to bed the things together. One exception was the faying/feying surfaces where planking would be hitting the deadwood, floors, etc. There, we did the boat sauce and later, right before planking, we used red lead paint. We also used Dolphinite/Dofinite on those surfaces--but took care not to get Dolphinite into the rabbet for the planking.

Hope that helps :)
